    Punctuation for phone conversation?

    So I was wondering how to go about correctly writing a phone conversation. I have a character who is receiving a phone call in which you only hear her side of the talking. How would you put in the pauses between dialogue responses?

    You can use an em dash (indicated by -- in manuscript) within a dialogue fragment to indicate a pause. Longer pauses can be shown by beats between the dialogue fragments. A beat is an action inserted between dialogue segments:
