So this question is mildly different but that seemed the most sucicent way to title this. I have been our of sorts in writing lately and am idea I had was to do a patreon. Not for my novel but for erotic short stories. It was brought to my attention. I may want to be careful here as my goal is still to one day publish a YA novel. And being associated with porn I hear is no good. Especially given that the stories I planned to write here are a bit more.... Less mainstream(yeah embarrassed to say more lol) Is a pen name all I would need? Or should more elaborate details be taken. Someone said I shouldn't never even consider letting the same crowd know I do both. Like never tell fans of porn(if I get that far) that I have non porn writing. Discuss!
Not that I'm an expert of the subject but I'd say it would be reversed, never tell your non porn fans that you have porn. That being said I guess it depends on how much shame you have. I know some people who don't care that they have porn attached to their name. It also depends on how risque your stuff is. If your erotic short stories has large age difference and you write a young adult novel, well, I can see how that could turn wrong easily. If you start a patreon for erotic short stories I'd just say don't use your real name and don't tell your non-porn followers you write porn and vice versa. Simple. Easy. Done.
From what I gather. The logic seems to be. If a porn fan knows I write non porn. They could reveal this to try and hurt my ability to be published Or something along those lines In fairness I thought that may be a bit extreme but I am no good at the technical sides to this. Hence trying to research/discuss this in depth before making a move
I'm not familiar with patreon. Smashwords is another place to consider that allows certain erotic topics not allowed on Amazon. And yes, there all you need is a pen name. Your other information is never given to readers.
Well, it's most usually the case that you become published and then a porn fan recognizes your porn work and calls it out on twitter or something and then nonporn fans go through your porn works and make judgments based on what they see and then call out what they deem as problematic and then suddenly you're bombarded with accusations and your chances of another publisher publishing another of your works plummets. Or you could be fine and I'm being fatalistic. Again, I think just a simple pen name will be fine.
Maybe she wasn't writing YA, but Anais Nin did more than okay writing smut and still publishing many other things.
You should always get different names for different target audiences. Imagine bringing underage to your erotic works doesn't sound nice.
This isn't true. I know we're talking about YA and erotica specifically here, but plenty of writers write for multiple audiences without having a pen name at all. In fact, most published writers do not have pen names.
I think you have two issues here . Using pen names and writing things your nervous about . It has never been a problem to use pen names , and there are some writers that like to use different names for different genre . Eric Blair used a pen name when he Published, Down and out in Paris and London . Partly because he did not like his family name associated with the contents, but also he was trying to hide the fact he was middle class, with no money worries A fact that did not fit with the character he was pretending to be in the book . It did not work , we all know who George Orwell was . You might not become as famous as him , but personally I would not write anything that I would not like to put my own name to.
