Grammar Help to identify the grammar mistake in this sentence

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Artifacs, Jan 5, 2019.

Hello friends. I was watching a youtube video (btw, thanks @Alan Aspie) tittled Linguistic and Style in the 21st century by Steven Pinker
Near the end, the professor comments some wrong sentences used by famous people (presidents, politics, actors) and asks the choir why are wrong. I understood all the examples, except one (the audio didn't work for me in this sentence):

Can anyone lecture me about the mistake commited in this one?

    Thank you for your help.

It is a dangling participle because "checking in" attempts to modify "it". Checking in should modify "I"/"me". It can be fixed:
Checking into the hotel, I was happy to see a few of my classmates in the lobby.

    See e.g. https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/dangling-participles?page=1
