I am neither late nor am I early, I have arrived exactly when I meant to.

    Hello everyone.

My name is David, but a majority of people I know call me Wings (It is a long story involving a graphic designer, an online friend, a zombie game, and a man with a speech impediment...). I love to write, draw, and just create in general. I have started a story, kind of a Fantasy Novel, and I needed a place to come to so as to find help, inspiration, and a fellow author or two to help me along this road I have dared to travel.

Since this is an introduction area I guess that is what I should be doing. So, let me start from the top once more.

My name, as I have said, is David (A.K.A. Wings). I am 20 years old and live southern Michigan, where I was born and raised. I am engaged to my middle school sweet heart, Chelsi, and we live together in a small apartment with two lovely dogs. Recently, I have been getting the urge to write and write, much like I did back when I was in my early years of high school, only this time instead of putting aside that urge and applying it towards school papers and other such things, I have decided to put pen to paper (or fingers to keys as it were) and pound out a novel. My goal with this is to be published by the time I am 25 and to continue being published late into my aging years. However, I am having a few problems with this.

First, my job doesn't allow me much time for anything (I managed to get today off on a stroke of luck). I work for the city as a contractor that goes around and cuts lawns on foreclosed houses, just to keep the city looking nice. The hours are- and this was in the job description- from sunrise to sunset everyday. So, by the time I get home, I don't want to write, or do anything for that matter except sleep to make sure I am rested for my shift the next day. (I've recently decided that every night I will write out at least one paragraph just to make sure I get some headway one my writing.)

Second, I find myself being too critical of what I am writing and it makes me want to stop writing all together at times.

And finally, I have no one (outside of Chelsi) to share ideas with or talk to, and I was hoping to find another author to talk with, just to bounce ideas off of and have read what I have so far, kind of how Lewis and Tolkien worked together all those years ago.

So there it is, the reason I have joined this amazing little corner of the Internet. To find friends and colleagues to help me along my journey.

I look forward to meeting many of you and sharing ideas as well as listening to all of yours.

    With love and peace,
    ~Wings.

    Welcome to the forums Wings.

To keep from confusion I must call you that as I may not know if I am talking in first or third person if I call you by your first name.

What type of dogs do you have?

Haha, I would think that maybe you would be speaking in third person...

The two dogs I have are a Beagle, named King Bruce, and a Klee Kai, named Katara Ann.

Now, I get a lot of questions about the latter dog, Katara, as an Alaskan Klee Kai is still a rare-ish breed. It is essentially a minature husky, and comes in three sizes; standard, which is what Katara is (about 26in tall), miniature, and toy.

Hello Wings, Welcome to the Creative Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Writing Workshop before you try to post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here anyway. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Writing Workshop, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Writing Workshop, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. We also impose a two-week waiting period before you may post writing for critique, to give you time to become familiar with what is expected and how the site operates. The Writing Workshop forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Writing Workshop forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
