    What are you best at?

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by Gallowglass, May 12, 2009.

Or, more simply, what is the most important quality of your writing?

For me its how I create an in-depth setting with realistic characters.

Difficult to say, objectively. I have never asked anyone who knows my work this question, so I don't know the answer! :D
Feedback that I have received indicates that the answer would vary from person to person.

According to my critique groups, three-dimensional characters and dialogue that rings true.

Strong, well-paced, detailed action. I just always feel like I've written well after a fast-paced scene where plenty happens, whereas the slower scenes are a weakness. I'm also a little weak at showing my characters' descriptions, rather than just telling them.

I'm pretty good at dialogue. I feel like the dialogue I write usually sounds quite natural and fits the character who speaks it.

I'd have to say creating unique characters. I'm also fairly good at writing really morbid scenes, when the occasion calls for it.

I would have to say my best quality is just my ability to create the story. I can think of some in depth plots and develop them really well. And i come up with some unique ideas. That and shaping the characters and giving them a personality, never was good a naming them though

I most enjoy and think I'm best at dialogue.

Ah, a thread where we get to be proud of our skills. I like it!

I think I'm best at portraying teenage girls from Ontario in a realistic way that I hardly ever see in Canadian YA fiction.

I think I'm very good at mapping out plots and tying together plot threads. I can write a twist that doesn't make sense even to me and later come up with a way to make it work.

Unfortunately I'm awful at actually putting the plots to paper.

Making fun, somewhat unique, and interesting characters.

Furthermore, creating settings where I can move the character all around and really show his personality and characteristics off.

Yes, I think characters with depth, entertaining dialogue and open personalities is the thing I am most attentive to.
Stories will come and go, but your CHARACTERS will last a long time. They can be memorable.

I'm good at coming up with the ideas for stories, and I tend to get the beginnings down, but after that... I never exactly stay with it for the long haul.

I would like to think make interesting story ideas in my mind, but I always fall flat after the beginning of my stories.

wildthing and bumboclaatjones, if you ever get stuck and don't know how you can continue with the plot, just go ahead and write! Go off on a complete tangent. It'll either get back to the plot, or create a twist and improve the plot.

My story's became a lot more detailed because I kept writing even if I was sure it was a waste of time ;)

According to my critics, I'm pretty lame at everything.

Don't stand for that! Goes for you too, theiflyzephyrguy.

I'm best at description probably, although I'm practicing a lot at dialogue and creating memorable, solid characters.

I'm good at making up a story in general. I have nothing to put it to writing.

    I'm good at creating metaphors.

I have been told that i am best at evoking my emotion and gritty determination into my poems. I am certainly not the most profound poet there has ever been and it is easy to blow your own trumpet but relativly speaking i agree with what people have said.

I enjoy detail, or world building. Creating a place for people to escape in, is what i enjoy. (Understanding not everyone wants to read such things though.)

I also like creating (in my mind) and writing set-pieces (though not too obvious set peices).
