I have a idea for a novel set in Hong Kong during the 1870s. The story involves a lot of Chinese Myth, especially since the main character, who is a British school boy, is being guided throughout the story by a creature from Chinese Myth. Anyone have any suggestions on what creature from Chinese Myth could make sense as a benevolent guide?
Dragons spring to mind. Dragons are often seen as benevolent gods in Chinese culture. You should do your research on what type of dragon would suit your story best.
If you're writing a story that involved a lot of Chinese myths, it really seems like you should an expert on them. I'd recommend doing a good bit of independent research if this is genuinely important to the story.
My wife is Chinese, and I could pass along any specific question. Others have mentioned dragons already: look at the character they used for that role in Mulan. Disney specializes in such characters, and that’s what they came up with. (I wonder if his name is an homage to Toy Story?)
