    Map-making

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by DarkPen14, Aug 21, 2019.

Does anyone know any decent map making websites/applications? I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, but I can fiddle with coordinates with the best of 'em.

I often use Inkarnate for creating maps. It's honestly the best for fantasy map-making, if that's what you're looking for, so I highly recommend it. The free version is great on its own. I haven't upgraded to the full version, but I heard it's worth every penny. Hope that helps.

This is awesome. Definitely going to play around with this one for a bit to get a real feel for if I like it or not. Thank you.

I also use Inkarnate, and the free version has served my needs fairly well. But I suspect it's time I put up some money and purchase the full version.

@Night Herald uses another really slick looking map maker.

Did some poking around. This one turned out pretty good.

It randomly generates a base. If you don't like it, you can generate a new one, and you can edit what's generated however you want.

I used to use Inkarnate, but moved to GnuIMP when I wanted more control over things like colour palette. It's really not that hard to pick up after trying for a bit. My main suggestions is to just use google maps to find a bit of coast or terrain you find interesting, and just work outwards from there.

For this, I took the area that I wanted, tinkered with some aspects, removed others, added some extra bits, and then just started adding detail. Five points to whoever can work out what this area originally was.

Not a map making program, but I made my map in paint.net.
I wanted to make a post-apocalyptic map of an area consisting of four real towns. I took screenshots of these towns on google maps, made the images translucent, and aligned them at the boarders to create one map (but with all the details of the smaller maps). Then, on a new layer, I traced the town boarders, highways, wide roads (the thin roads would be destroyed in my story). I then took the magic wand (detects colors) to highlight all of the green (grass/forests) on the screenshots and bring that green to a new layer. I did the same with the blue (water). Lastly, I added the fictional locations (emergency bunkers and Foxhound base).

I used to use Dwarf Fortresses world creation to build random maps for fun. Basically builds a whole world you can faff about in for a while, which is fairly in depth and used to get my brain excited back in the day.

AutoRealm! I still have the version from 2002. It's open source and hard to use! Which is fine.
Campaign Cartographer 3 is good, too. Again old, though. Mine is from 2006. Still around, expensive.
I used to use something called Roleplaying City Map Generator, too. That one is probably dead, but the download is still up.
My game takes place in space (or a very dead earth), so they're collecting dust on the old spinning hard drive.

It's the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
