Words with lots of Ls and Rs

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Haribo Icecream, Jan 19, 2011.

Hi everyone, I'm newish here :)

I'm writing a story (duhh lol), and part of it needs at least three long English words with lots of Ls and Rs, and I could only think of parallelogram, any more? :)

I'm guessing you're from the Orient.

Is "horological" any good to you?

do you need them to have 'lots of r's and l's in the same word?

i haven't seen a single suggestion yet that contains 'lots' of both letters... or even more than one of both in the same word, with only one exception that had 2 of each, but not 'lots' or even 3...

makes me wonder if such a word actually exists in english...

    parallelepipedon

    I got this from www.rhymezone.com

I just put in the letters 'para', there's a drop down box with options, choose the 'match letters' option and you'll get a list with loads.

Its a good site, rhyming dictionary, thesaurus, dictionary. I find it very useful.

    Corollary.

Not the sort of word you like to happen upon when reading out aloud. It seems to contain all the potential for mischief-making that the old 'red lorry, yellow lorry' toungue twister does.

thing is, the op wants words with 'lots' of both l's and r's in the same english word...

and i'm still not seeing a single one that does... even the one he found [parallelogram]doesn't fit, since it has only 2 r's...

I have searched and most of the words that fit the bill would be nearly impossible to fit into a story. Most of them are things like chemical names or scientific related stuff. And even then, those words only have a lot of r's and l's because they have a lot of letters to begin with, 20+ letters.

I question the purpose of the assignment, seems like busy work.

Since the OP still hasn't found one he likes, let me point out that it's possible to get a complete list. I did something similar in looking for words with particular features for handwriting drills.

You can find a list that purports to be all the English words, one per line.

A simple Perl script will cull that to a short list of words that have multiple Ls and Rs. In fact, you could do it on one line:

    C:\directory> perl -ne"print if tr/l/l/ >=2 && tr/r/r/ >=2"

Au contrare :D The context simply needs to word to exist and at least be semi-pronouncable :p

Ohh no I've seen plenty actually :) I've not got to the bit where I need them yet in my writing, I've been a bit lax as of late, but when I've used the ones I like I'll quote each one with a thank you
