    Looking For Dragon Names

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by ELeFloch, Aug 10, 2017.

My character in my novel is going to have a dragon (of sorts) and I'm looking for a name for him. In my head he looks dark red, eyes amber in color, but will glow yellow or red depending on the mood. He will help the king in more than just battle, also in every day life, so I would like an interesting name. My main male character is named Draco, so I would prefer nothing too close to this name. Any ideas would be helpful! I have looked on the internet, but none seem to work for me, and seeing as Game of Thrones has a lot of influence on dragon names these days I'm trying to stay away from those names if possible. Thanks in advance!

    Bob.

Seriously though, what kind of name are you looking for here? Something Latin or Greek? Basic English (albeit probably not Bob)? Something completely alien-sounding and keysmashy?

I thought of Phlegethon, Icarus, Phaethon, and Heliod for associations with fire / the sun, but I don't even know if your dragon flies and breathes fire, much less if anything like that fits with your vibe.

    Heh, Draco. How apt.

Just come up with some fancy fantasy-sounding names. It is not like you have to use Romantic or Germanic based names. Besides, most western names have no literal meaning, and some even require you to dig deep into their etymology to figure out where the heck they came from anyway.

You could also opt for the eastern style of naming and use names that have an actual meaning in the spoken language. Sometimes, I like to name all of my characters after flowers/plants, like Aster, Camellia, Ash, and Reed.

Maybe all of your dragon names can be given based on some peculiar trait of the dragon. For example, your dragon in question can be named, "Fervor," since he is red and his eye color changes according to his mood.

It's a new concept so it's still new to me as well on what he's going to do. And yes he flies and breaths fire and the like. Any name from any language or culture is fine. It's a fantasy novel so I can incorporate different ideas with regards to that. But Bob was a nice thought!

That is an excellent idea. And I like that name...

Azidam... Babby... Icariga? Gee I dunno, I don't know exactly what your going for, so I don't know if my ideas will fit the tone of your story.

I am considering having dragons in one of my stories, I am giving them majestic titles like "Seraphina of the Fire" or "Sonrah of the Sky", which is a stark contrast to their stupid and comedic nature.
When I can't think of a name, I ussually just keep trying to develop the character until I happen upon a good name. Good luck

Thank you. :) I like those names actually. I like something different. Right now I have a name I'm okay with, but not sure if it's going to stick, so I will definitely keep this in mind!

If you don't use Dave or Bob (which really, they're the best ones so far), I like Vatra. It means fire in Croatian, and sounds cool (to me).

I always liked cutesy names for fierce creatures... Like Fluffy, Cuddles, Garlic, Stevie... Toasty might be good for a fire-breathing dragon... or S'mores.

ETA: I wanted to name our 6lb terrier something tough, like Nails, Bricks, or Rambo, but my wife overruled me.

Homer, I was about to suggest Roasty or Toasty as dragon names :) S'mores is great.

I skimmed the replies here... is the name from the people he is helping, or do they call him his own name? Is he named after his accomplishments or given to him at birth?

    Sorry I know I'm being vague, it's j
Haha that is great! Our dog was named Ronin, but he was a 90 pound german shepherd so it kind of fit. Those names don't really fit with my story I'm afraid. Too cutesy sad to say.

Sorry I was kind of vague. He is going to be a dragon-shifter in essence, but only in times of deep need, not just because he wants to. The dragon inside of him is a part of him, but has a mind of it's own in a way, and is teaching him what he needs to know about this new power he has. There is a lot more too it, but I'm still developing it and don't want to give it away just yet. :) So I need a name for him that works with Draco (and yes I picked that name for my main character on purpose) because essentially, they are apart of one another and they feed off the other's emotions and thoughts.

    Dracule. Drakul.

I figure since you went with Draco, something else close to draconic would also fit. Sounds vampiric as well, which with them 'feeding' off of each others emotions and thoughts could be fitting...
