    Mining the "Confessions" page

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Hublocker, Apr 14, 2018.

The local Entertainment weekly has a confessions page.

In it people write in about just about everything that is bothering them such as bike lanes, foreigners, impolite people on the bus, infidelity complaints, I mean lots of infidelity complaints, etc.

There was a guy the other day complaining about not being able to get an erection after cycling for 6 hours. The week before a woman wrote in that she was afraid to be intimate with men because she was embarrassed about the length of her labia. People grumble about their partner who was unfaithful or how they are going to drop their friend because he/she was cheating on their partner.

Dating and meeting people is another huge subject one woman wrote in that she was overweight and knew that guys just picked her up to try one-off sex with a fat girl or because they thought fat girls were easy lays.

Guys complain that women are unfriendly or gold-diggers, women complain that men are non-commital, yada, yada, yada.

Have you ever cruised those pages for story ideas?

There sure are a lot of them.

I don't particularly read magazines, but a confessions page would be an interesting place to look for ideas. Small things in small packages, I guess.

I've seen a lot of little "Confessions" (things like posing as a mannequin in a department store window or something) that I sometimes steal for little incidents in books, fanfics, etc. The Drivetime show on BBC Radio 2 has a "Confessions" section where someone sends in a story of something they did when they were younger, and that's always great. My favourite is from two art students who filled a lift with polystyrene balls and recorded the result. So, yeah. I lap them up, although not as premises.
