What's next after vampires and werewolves?

Discussion in 'Fantasy' started by Holo, Sep 11, 2011.

I know vampires and werewolves have been around for a long time and will remain popular for years to come, but what other supernatural creatures do you think will become popular or should be popular?

Zombies are pretty popular, too - at least, they were for a while.

I am totally okay with this. Zombies are cool.

To me the popularity of all of them go in cycles. Sometimes Vamps and Weres are popular sometimes it's aliens or super heroes. Sometimes it's just paranormal activity. People will always be fascinated with what they can't explain or seems like a mystery.

Someone brought this up before and the one I liked was Death/Grim reaper.

How about dragons and gryphons? Really, I could see it go in any direction once the next best seller fantasy novel comes out.

Well there's a lot of fallen angel stuff around right now - I reckon next stop: teenage witches. But who knows? Could well be mermaids...lol. Take your bets, people! :p

Dragons of course. More dragons the better.

I think the new big thing in books, as a result of the popularity of The Hunger Games, is/will be YA books involving a dystopian world.

I'm a zombie girl myself (one of the dozen novels I'm writing is a zombie apocalypse story), but I'm also partial to more mystical things. I like witches, but only if they're good and insane...not fluffy, teenage-girls-growing-up-together-in-a-boarding-school kinds of witches. Shapeshifters of kinds other than werewolves are cool too, especially if they shift into something creepy and disturbing.

    But yeah, mostly zombies. XD

If any of us knew, odds are we probably wouldn't be on a writing forum!

Zombies. Much better and more interesting than vampires or werewolves IMO.

Well, Koontz did Frankenstein, quite well in my opinion lol.

What I expect to see next are probably something in a Dr. Jekyll theme; perhaps a Dorian Gray rewrite? Ahh, I love the classics as they are =]

But, a similar story in a modern setting helps the concepts connect with those who might not be able to enjoy the older works.

I would like to see a "Faust"-like tale myself, haha. (Of course, the one I'm writing is still in the pen+paper stage.) Who knows if the Faust tale is written in a dark and foreboding tone it might help serve as a warning against "Wanting It All"

    Cyborgs, mutants...

Kamelot: Epica & The Black Halo. Granted, it's not a novel, but it's beautiful.

Hm, metal music isn't the kind I normally listen to, but the story behind it is fascinating. Thanks for sharing it =]

Witches are pretty fun :D I use them as a sort of basis for magic in my stories, though it's really just Wicca, and therefore they're not supernatural creatures and "witch" is more of a job description than a race/class/something mystic in the blood.

Also I only have a couple of witch characters... The goblins far outweigh them, but no one is going to find goblins sexy as a mass movement any time soon...

I would like to see a return of psychological horror, minus over the top, extreme gore. While I love horror novels and the lengths some of them go to, I appreciate more the build up of suspense and the terror of the unseen.

There's really no end to where it could go... I was always fascinated by the monsters in Greek mythology as a child, and when I see something like "Fluffy" in the 1st Harry Potter, the link to the Cerberus is obvious. I'd like to see more of those come back, possibly some clever new take on the gorgons, or the minotaur.

digitig has it right, here. It's all about the presentation, and in the right author's hands, almost anything can become a fascinating new mythology.

There's an appeal about monsters we're already familiar with, as opposed to trying to completely invent something new. It can be done, but it has to be amazingly well done to capture the imagination, as in the Alien movies.

A story isn't really a story unless it contains a dragon. I enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird but felt that a couple of dragons wouldn't have gone amiss. Perhaps one playing the role of judge in the courtroom, or maybe an omniscient dragon, continually encircling the town as a portent of doom. Harper Lee definitely missed a trick there.

I like zombies, I know they're used a lot but I really like the concept and I have zombie-esque creatures appear throughout my main story plan for my project.

So perhaps I should include a zombie dragon? I mean it's either that or a dragon in a hoodie smoking with a gang of chavs in the background of a scene. ;)

I think zombies. I like zombies. As well as demons/angels, perhaps witches. Maybe someone will do a "the blob that ate everything" remake. Who knows? I do wanna see a dragon-esque story, like a human that possesses the skills and can change into a dragon. Actually that's a character I wouldn't mind doing, if I could.
