New laptop, new Linux (calling all geeks)

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by LordKyleOfEarth, Jun 28, 2010.

So my new laptop will be here on Wednesday. I have gotten to like Linux for most of my computing so I'm definitely installing a distro as soon as I can (I'll keep win7 around on a small partition in case I need windows for something).

My question is which distro? Ubuntu 9.07 was pretty nice and I hear Karmic is bomber. However I'm starting to get a bug up my butt to try Gentoo (I must be more of a masochist than I previously thought). I figure that by the end of that, I'll be a 1337 h4x0r Linux pro.

Anyone have a favorite distro or experience compiling one?

I've only tried a few of the linux distros and I really liked Ubuntu the most. Most debian distros are similar though and I know some people who prefer Fedora over Ubuntu. In my opinion the Gnome desktop is much better than KDE.

I've always favored SuSE, myself. But it isn't that big a deal anyway, you generally tweak to your own preferences anyway, no matter which distro you use.

True. The new laptop has roughly 300gb more space than the old one. I think I'll install several distros and see how I like them. Cog, I wasn't sure if I wanted to try SuSE, but I will now :) Thanks

I've heard good things about Arch, although I've been too busy to try it out myself. It's easier to pronounce than Ubuntu.
