In my story the protagonists, both of whom are teens, each sustain a compound (open) leg fracture. The injury is sustained while they try to shepherd younger children out of the way of a drunk driver. The drunk driver is their cousin. (Your niece) How would you feel as then parents/caretakers of the main characters? I should say that things between the main characters and their parents are improving greatly after a rough stretch. Your niece has partied and been in trouble before but their parents have dismissed your concerns.
