Songs that relate to/remind you of your main character.

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by BearOfTheNorth, Jul 3, 2020.

Does anyone else have a list of songs that they listen to when writing that feel like they were written for your main character? :)

    Here's my list:

    Misery – Gallows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLfRTogxnKc

Make Art Not Friends- Sturgill Simpson https://youtu.be/U0-mjAB_Mig

Hidden Truth - Vampire Knight OST https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkaLedOAd_s

Last Dinosaur - The Pillows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9i1f_vt43c
    (English lyric translation https://www.animelyrics.com/jpop/thepillows/lastdinosaur.htm )

Break Stuff - Limp Bizkit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d9vrnptuF0

Middle of Nowhere - The Blank Theory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUTORvTyACU

Running Up That Hill – Placebo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-mYX0qKkB8

    Burning Bright – Shinedown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NsQr33wbdY

Sexual Hallucination - In This Moment feat. Brent Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fp4yRDEVyM

    Bloodstream - Stateless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05vSgyzELMM

Not Strong Enough - Apocalyptica ft. Brent Smith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlZuqUTgcss

Easier To Run - Linkin Park https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5zdmjVeQzE

    A Vampire's Lament - Atreyu

The lyrics for the last one really suit my character:
I am the walking dead heartbreaker, my apologies
I'm happy you'll never understand what it's like
To be trapped under six feet of solid glass
I can see out, but no one gets in
Screaming at this prison I've locked myself into
I'm sorry that I'm still breathing and that I'll kill again
But the loneliness is too much for me to handle
The taste of fresh blood pushes me on
I told myself the constant pain could ease the tension burning inside
But the nights were cold and the days dragged to weeks
I will die here alone, I will die
    The fear of romance
    The pain of living
    The joy of sorrow
    The strength of unforgiving
    The strength of unforgiving
God help me, I'm so tired
But in my dreams, the wolves eat out my soul
God help me, I'm so frightened
But in my dreams, the wolves tear out my heart
I used to be golden, a saint in a time of sorrow
But then the turning came and I kissed the sun goodbye
Don't you get it? It's always darker in my eyes
The screams of my brothers egging me on

Nope, I tend to think in a bit broader sense and terms
when it comes to music and story.
Sometimes a song can fit the tone of a scene, but there
is some overlap with the overall story. :)

    Damned good thread idea, Bear.

I have an entire playlist of over 400 songs that I've chosen over the last couple of years, not just for my characters, but for specific scenes/settings that get me in the mood when im about to write.

    I'll just provide a selection. :D

    Namazu (the young Japanese hacker)

Raz Kadir (the globe trotting private investigator)

Zarina Verma (the Indian corporate spaceship Commander)
This one is rather apt, since her story is tied in to her parents, and this is based on a traditional Hindi song about the mother and father.

Milan Kalakov (a no-nonsense Major in the Russian Space Force)

Liv Rademaker (a Councilor for the Colony on Mars, when the Martians keep getting screwed over by Earth)

I set one of the chapters in my full novel, a bike chase scene involving Raz and Namazu, to this. The illustrious and awesome - Justice.
This is the best remix of Waters of Nazereth I've heard.

And the first chapter in my novel ended with me using this as a backdrop...

Ranbu Escalation - a duet from the Kamen Rider franchise, more precisely Kamen Rider Gaim, really fit my main antagonist Huanglong and the character Ouryuu from my series Chronicles Of Sekai during the third book. They were as close as can be until events at the end of the second book put them on opposite sides in the conflict. Finally, just some info for the video: Huanglong is the one with black background and Ouryuu is the one with white background.

This song fits my character Naim almost painfully well.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your songs with me everyone. I love Rammstein, Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown. Currently making my way through the list of songs you've shared with me. It's amazing isn't it how some songs have lyrics that just seem to fit our characters perfectly. I love my music, such a great source of inspiration and I love it when people share the songs with me too. :)
