Have been trying to find a word to identify the semi conscious dream-like state as one emerges from sleep. The act of 'lying in' , merely lying in bed drifting in & out of sleep whilst letting the mind wonder. I did find "hypnopompic" but feels a little scientific and seems oft used in the context of nightmares - which isn't quite the emotional link I'm looking for. Appreciate any pointers/suggestions. Thanks
Here are a few other terms you could use: Parasomnia dissociated sleep state sleep transition state Found them here. Or you could just come up with your own more common-sense terms like 'dreaming while awake.' Hypnopomp (or psychopomp) become a little bit cooler though when you know they're the ancient Greek terms for a spirit that accompanies you or takes you to the underworld (land of dead souls) when you die, or sometimes when you're still alive and need to talk to a recently-departed person.
I like to call that the liminal state between dream and waking. It’s not an everyday word, but it’s common enough that it doesn’t sound like you’re showing off a cool word you found in the thesaurus.
The transition between wakefulness and sleep is termed hypnagogia. You lose touch with reality, imagination peaks, and may hallucinate.
It was always hypnopompic (unless I'm dreaming now). Hypnopompic hallucinations happen when waking up, hypnogogic when falling asleep.
Waking nightmare and waking dream might also fit in there. I have had these before. It is awful beyond words, far outside of what you'd consider a normal nightmare, which for me are pretty bad to begin with. Really makes you question reality. I suppose that's true for any vivid hallucination though.
