    "They" with a singular antecedent

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by lameri, Apr 18, 2011.

What's your take on it? A sentence like:
I think of somebody I haven’t thought about in months, and suddenly I hear from them.
    or
I think of somebody I haven't thought about in months, and suddenly I hear from him.
    or something else?

Here's an article on the subject, with tons of comments:

"They," "their," and "them" are perfectly acceptable. We've been doing it in English for centuries now and it's completely understandable and unambiguous. Anyone saying otherwise is just trying to be a grammar nazi.

I'm not sure how editors, agents, or publishers would see it. My take is it might be acceptable in conversation, but I'd go with the singular pronoun or rephrase it.
