    What if...

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Forgetmenot77, Jan 13, 2009.

I don't know anything other than family matters and I am trying to give my charactor a hobbie..what do I do? I am making a checklist of my charactor but I am stuck on the hobbie thing.

Why don't you choose a hobby or interest of yours and use that? At least then you'll know what you're writing about.

He can have any hobby in the world. Why does it matter? Sports, video games, rock collecting . . . lol. Why limit yourself to the possibilities? :)

Well, in order to help, I'd need to know his agerange. Guys have different hobbies, often, when they are preteen-young teen, than when they are adults.

Also, popular hobbies depend on when and where the setting is. Collecting Yu-Gi-Oh! cards is contemporary, and not really gender-specific. Pogs came and went a few years ago. Collecting Star Wars action figures and other collectibles was huge in the 1980s, not so much now. Collecting sports cards is less ephemeral. Building plastic models, ditto. Some craft hobbies stand the test of time, others are passing fads.

Does he talk to them? Do they have names? Are they of the same caliber as Gordon Brown's public relations advisors?

A character's hobbies can be important to indicate personality traits. I mean for example, obsessive types might make tiny models or construct railway layouts. A person who likes to be in a group might go drag-car racing at the weekends.

You just said your character is interested in plants. Bonsai, cacti, rare orchids... which type? They all have their different followings--my grandfather was into prize (=enormous) vegetables, and made peculiar soups from them.
