    What happened to those books?

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Z__, May 12, 2010.

    Hello

I'd like to know if anyone remembers those - choose your own adventure books?
Like those ones where you read a page and at the bottom was written something like...

If you want to enter the room, turn to page 59
If you prefer to carry along the corridor turn to page 69

Does anyone know what happened to these books and whether they are still popular?

I used to have them as a kid. Fighting Fantasy ones, too. I'm guessing that computers killed them off.

Do a google search and you'll get the wiki entry.

I have to agree with Whiffet that the tech age did away with them.

I also had them as a kid. I even had a cute boxed set that I received as a gift one X-Mas from friends of my parents. I took them everywhere. I was such a little nerdy boy. :)

Yes, they turned into interactive fiction games, and virtually disappeared from bookstore shelves. And not a nanosecond too soon, in my opinion.

They have a whole shelf of them at the public library in my town. So they do still exist, but more or less on dusty bookshelves in a poorly stocked library.

Oh, I used to LOVE those! :D Fun way to spend a day, trying to take every path possible in the book. I read the R.L. Stine ones all the time. I don't think I read a choose-your-own-adventure book that WASN'T R.L. Stine.

TSR (the creators of Dungeons and Dragons) also published a number of them.

I do remember them but I always felt lost and cheated at some point and ended up tossing them aside. I was too controlling.

Do any of you remember a series of childrens' books called Banana Books. I can't remember much about them apart from a Banana symbol. I think Banana was either the icon for the series or the publisher? In any case, I was addicted and would always hound the librarian for the next installment. If I'd been young enough for Harry Potter I would no doubt have been hospitalized with excitement.

Hmmmm thought as much.... I'd like to make them see a comeback. I've thought about writing one for children with pictures. I've got the basic storyline for one and an idea for another (I'm no artist so with someone who can draw)

There are so many children's books in the local bookshop. Borders used to have a great selection before they went bust so I don't think the era of books for fun is completely dead.

If you have an iPhone then you can actually download two of the books (which have had the "game system" integrated into them). Just search for "Fighting Fantasy" in the app store.

I haven't downloaded any of them...but I may well do now. They cost £1.79 from the appstore.

LOL, yah. I think they were more popular with boys though. (Just guessing.) I used to not really like reading when I was young so I would always pick the option that would make me finish the book first. :(
