Was thinking of getting into building small model kits like ships, planes, etc. Got any tips for me? Where do I even start? All I know is that I want to build ships, and I gotta make the shelf spaces for them.
Nippers, sandpaper or sanding stick, cement and applicator plus cutting mat. Cut the pieces off the sprues, sand down nubs with sandpaper, apply glue, attach pieces and wait for cement to dry. If you want to paint, and remove seam lines, you need a filler to fill in the seams, then file smooth, and paint. For painting, an airbrush is the best option but you can equally handpaint. Depends how far you want to go as a beginner.
Seriously, how about Lego kits? Talk about complex engineering and technical challenge. The astonishing Lego world is for grown-ups, too. Are you looking to manufacture your own pieces from wood and brass (string? linen?) Even really small ones can be wonderfully engaging! There are even glueless and toolless kits. What kind of small ship or plane do you envision? Have you searched for a beginner's model vid on YT? I'd be curious to know what you find.
Wait, Lego is for adults too? I’ll have to do research on it first before I get much of anything. But I think for now I was just gonna get model kits from stores and put them together. That was the idea.
Some model kits can be really complicated and frustrating. Are you looking for sailing ships or more like battleships or something without all the rigging? I wouldn't even attempt anything with sails and rigging unelss you're a glutton for endless hours of punishement. I'd recommend first getting one pretty simple model and building that before deciding on anything more serious. They rate them according to difficulty, I'd need to look it up to see what the numbers mean.
