I'm normally not much of a poetry writer, but I figured that its National Poetry Month, so why not? My main poetry idea at the moment is from my female character's POV about a boy she thinks she may be falling for, but is confused about her feelings as she's never really experienced "love" I guess in like the human sense of the word.. The thing is, she is an alien and he is a human. Now, her species is pretty much anthropomorphic (think of like Roger from American Dad or Mantis from Guardians of the Galaxy). Obviously, I'm human lol so I'm pretty sure non-humans experience love/crushes differently than us humans lol. Could use some tips on how to write a poem about a situation/scenario like this
I love this idea! There's so much to explore with it. I guess the main question I have is: what do you want to say with the poem? It's okay if you don't know yet - you can discover that as you write. You might want to start with some timed freewriting. Just set a timer for 10 minutes and write without stopping to think about what you're saying. Write about love, about your first crush, about aliens, about anything that could be related to your poem, even loosely. When you're done, go back and read it and look for ideas and phrases that jump out at you as particularly good or important. These could be the seeds your poem grows from. If you need more seeds, just do more freewriting! I think it's important to identify the emotional difference(s) between your species and humans, because that will be a fundamental part of the poem. If you've already decided what the species is like, then that will influence what they can say (or not say) about human love. And if you haven't decided what they're like yet, then you can shape their emotional characteristics to fit what you want to say in the poem.
I think to understand the perspective you have to understand the person/human/alien. And to do that you need to flesh out the characters in the poem. Give them a personality and traits.
