Does this Godforsaken Place Not Have an Option to Delete an Account?

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by We Are Cartographers, Apr 6, 2013.

I would like to commit the forum-equivalent of honourable harakiri. But I can't seem to find the sword.

To the best of my knowledge, you can't delete an account. You can just leave and never come back, leaving the empty, soulless husk of yourself here, your comments pushed ever further back in time until you are completely forgotten ...

    Good luck, wherever you go.

Your profile, not "you're profile." Sorry - couldn't resist. Yeah, I guess I meant that. I was just kind of jokingly suggesting that his undeleted account would remain here as the husk of himself, while his real soul would be elsewhere. I didn't mean offense.

Ouch! I wasn't offended by the comment, but the embarrassment from that grammar mistake HURTS.

Generally it would be down to Admin to simply delete your account - common process on most forums I've visited - but your posts would remain.

Why do you want to delete your account over, say, just stopping coming here? Seems pretty simple to me. Nothing is requiring you to be here.

If the Staff can't delete an account, I presume the mechanics of the site mean it can't be done.

If you're worried about leaving your details, just go and edit your profile and remove all your personal details. As your posts have already been seen, there isn't any point in removing them. Just dust your cyber-hands and walk away!

Good luck to you, whatever you do from now on.

That's right. I wouldn't be able to delete an account, I just don't have that power. And as far as I know the site owner - Daniel - does not have that power either, or he has never done it.

I don't know why the OP wishes to leave the site but all I can say is: I've left this site once, for almost half a year, and I did that by just not coming here. If I can do it then I'm sure someone else can.

Walking away isn't as grand a gesture. If you can't slam the door on the way out, no one will notice your exit.

And you've been using the Internet for how long? You leave a trail wherever you go.

No, this isn't about slipping quietly away. It never was. Your every action says otherwise.

Well yes, throwing insults is one way to get banned again. Won't get your trail erased, though.

Sorry, forums don't work like that. Since other posts that come after yours are based on your posts, there's no way to completely remove any trace of you from a forum. Even if your account and everything else was deleted by the owner, the threads would still show your name, and then underneath it, "Guest," if this forum is built on the normal programming language that a lot of forums are built on anymore.

And even if it was all completely wiped off. It wouldn't matter. You can still be found easily on this forum, or have you not heard of Google search (it doesn't just search active accounts), or "The Way Back Machine," or one of a number of different ways in which you can be found on the internet after being on it. Sorry, but unless you're a top level hacker or part of a national internet security apparatus . . . "control" of traces on the internet is a pipedream.

Don't get angry at me when i say this, but the FBI tracks every internet post we make and keeps it so even if you delete your account, they still have the information. It's still there. This website has no delete option, so continuing to post like this will decrepitude your reputation by the community.

Allowing people's names to be removed (reduced to 'Guest,') would negatively affect the flow of discussions. If 2 people did this, whatever threads they both participated in would become very confusing, because no one would know who was saying what.

Also, if I said "I agree with cartographers" in a post, but your name was changed to 'guest,' people would probably think I was talking about actual cartographers, making them even more confused.

So, it's better for the forum if you don't delete your account permanently. Thanks for contributing as long as you did, though :)
