    Phone Writing Issues

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by Gravy, Nov 22, 2022.

So, I have a full-time job now that I actually like and I have been trying to write during my breaks. But, my phone (apple) is giving me some trouble. Because the " " marks are on another tab on the keyboard and it's so annoying to swap. Which is a real pain in my ass, because of the amount of dialogue I write. Is there a way to make this easier? Like, I was thinking about getting a fold-out keyboard attachment or something. Any recommendations? I don't trust custom keyboards, because I don't want them keying my words or something. i donno. But is there a way I can make it easier to use the " "?

Depending on your environment, a speech to text app might solve the issue for you. I tried that in the past but found there is too much background noise in my environment for that to work for me.
If you are using your phone, and planning on transferring the work to another platform. You might look at italics instead of quotes.

    Way, way out there
I tried voice to text once. Just the one already on my Mac, I didn't buy Dragon or anything. It was nice, but there were too many errors I had to fix afterwards. I might say for instance "He kicked over the trash can," and what it wrote was something like "Flea bit orbit the rash spam." And that was after I made sure to pronounce everything as clearly as possible. It always took a long time after I spoke to start, and sometimes it would skip several sentences as if I never even said them. Way more trouble than it was worth. Of course another program might work far better.

I has similar issues, but figured they were due to background noise.

I am not in a work environment where I can do text-to-speech. But I appreciate your thoughts. Italics are also a pain, because I have to toggle that. I have thought about NOT using any ""'s, but that makes it harder for me to edit later.

Sounds like you need to find a symbol, on your main KB screen. Then do a search and replace on that symbol later.

Try using a Bluetooth keyboard. It isn't nearly as satisfying as using an old IBM "clicky" keyboard, but infinitely better than attempting to type on a tiny on-screen "keyboard."
