    Curses and Profanities

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Curses, Nov 8, 2011.

Prepare for a double-feature introduction, where nothing is what it seems. I am Curses, and my girlfriend is Profanities, and our story is much the same so we thought we'd share an intro thread. And by nothing being what it seems, I mean to say that no we won't be swearing or using particularly rough language. I based my username off of hers, and hers, well, I'll let her tell you why she chose it.

We both have a long history of forum-based role-playing. We can both be so unmotivated sometimes, completing full-length independent written works eludes us often. Hence role-playing served to allow us to exercise and practice writing while keeping the segments short enough we wouldn't have the issues associated with long-term written works. However we're somewhat feeling like we've reached a wall. I'm pondering the notion that only by writing more lengthy solo pieces can we further improve - as well as get used to doing so so it's not so hard to see something through to the end as it is for us as of now. But we can't critique each other as accurately as would be useful, so here we are to fling ourselves upon the mercy of strangers for critique and advice. So once we qualify to be critiqued, we'll be composing short stories to try to work at things before attempting full-length novel works. I aim for publication, once I'm good enough and have a good enough tale to tell.

I've liked writing since young and I find it my best way of telling stories, which is what I like most about writing. I dabble in most genres, but I tend to refrain from romance. Not because I don't like it, or because I'm not romantic (just ask my girlfriend about that), but probably because I'm mushy enough with my girlfriend, any more mushiness is too much for me, haha. I'd have to say I love fantasy best though.

I saw another intro mention the Goosebumps series as inspiration. Those were my first novels I read. But nearing to high school, during a parent-teacher meeting, my English teacher told my parents those books were bad for me. Or rather, that I needed to diversify. Which led me to Dragonflame by Graham Edwards, and evidently a future liking of fantasy and dragons from then forth.

But this isn't my life story I guess, I shall trail off here with a "hello and see you all around".

[Edit: Profanity will make her debut in this thread tomorrow, as the internet monster ate her post and she hasn't time to reproduce it now]

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Curses!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks, Banzai, for the welcome! And yeah, we understand that the Writing Workshop is to be taken seriously. Rest assured that we'll also find much to learn from from the rest of the forum. The discussions in the other sub-forums are highly engaging too.

If you don't know already, I'm the aforementioned Profanities. Well, I find the word a very profound one (some wordplay intended) and I've always wanted people to call me Prof. *shot* But really, it's a great word to describe something so crude and so I find it an interesting username. XD

Anyway, we don't consider ourselves very good writers at all. My information has been written up in my profile, and I'm looking forward to improving on our writing with your help. Yeah, feel free to shoot us any questions too.
