    Another Newbie

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by TALLULAH, Nov 20, 2012.

Guess I should say off the top that my main focus is Short Story Writing. Writing a novel is way beyond my skill and confidence level. Have only begun to write on a consistent basis in the last six months. Prior to that it was in dribs and drabs.

Like so many others posting in this thread, I am extremely nervous and apprehensive about not only being able to live up to the standards here, but also concerned about knowing enough to even venture a critique, which is required from what I've read. Tried another writing forum a while back and was so terribly disappointed and discouraged by my experiences there. It was way too commercialized in the bargain.

Am here to learn, to contribute and hopefully, in the fullness of time, be able to critique in an intelligible and helpful way. Really look forward to getting to know everyone.

Appreciate your taking the time to read this.

    Best to you all, Tallulah

Hi and welcome Tallulah, sorry to hear that things didn't work out on your other forum. I too, joined another forum but stopped
going as they seemed a little to quick to argue. I want to improve my writing not debate! Oh, and don't worry about the critiquing -
it intimidated me at first ( punctuation is not one of my strong points ) but as a reader I can at least point out when things aren't
jelling or when A sentense needs work. Look forward to reading your stuff!

    Welcome Tallulah.

I am fairly new here as well, but I am relatively new to writing just like you. I think that for many of us, who are not published authors or official editors, people have to take our reviews with a grain of salt and also, when others like us give us reviews, we have to take it for what it is: and that is simply our thoughts as a reader. Did it make sense? Did it engage you? Etc. I don't really know Cogito, but he is one of the mods here and always has good perspective on topics. He wrote a post on this reviewing writing here: <Reviewing Forum?>.

I think we all secretly hope our writing inspires, but I think it's also important to allow yourself to be inspired by others' writing and writing techniques. So far, I like it here because I feel like I'm learning all the time. Welcome to the community. I hope you enjoy it here, but mostly, I hope you continually enjoy writing.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Tallulah!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
