I thought I knew was it was-- genre fiction that is more mature than YA but not as graphic as Adult. Geared towards ages 18-25 (sometimes i've seen 20-30). But lately, i've been seeing a lot of erotica labeled "new adult" (flipping through magazines and upcoming releases databases for work). So now im curious: if anyone write NA, what counts as "New Adult" and why isnt it just either "YA" or "Adult"? (good grief, a whole other genre i need to pay attention to! )
From what I read, New Adult is geared to "new adults" - ages 18-25, who are making the transition from adolescence to adulthood. It has been called "YA notched up a gear." The topics it frequently explores: Moving away from home for the first time Starting higher education Deeper exploration of sexual experiences, identity and gender Establishing careers Figuring out relationships – familial, platonic and romantic There's been some controversy associated with it, labelling it as thinly-veiled erotica that takes place at university. https://jerichowriters.com/what-is-new-adult-fiction/
