Ever come across moments when you've read something, or indeed watched something, and thought, hang on, thats the same as what i read/saw in... to the point that it makes you wonder if someones been peeking at other peoples homework? Obviously there are going to be lots of similarities in peoples works as they draw inspiration from other things, so i'm talking about things that are so similar they leap out at you and force you to check the similarities. I just had a moment like that. I watched the film A Quiet Place and the aliens in that screamed SIREN from the Nicholas Sansbury Smith Hell Divers series. The visual representation and how it functioned in the film were so close to the mental representation I had of them from the books that I did a double take. So i looked in to it. The first book was released in July 2016, the script for the film was given to the directer in July 2016. - My spideysense is all over the place right now and I want to know more...
Well, sometimes people can express things very similarly but independently. And of course cryptomnesia while rare, does happen. I've heard of the Hell Diver series but don't know about the sirens. Supposedly, the people that wrote the screenplay for 'Gladiator' had never seen 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' which I find hard to believe.
I dont have the description of them to hand but essentially a Siren is a creature that is blind and is attracted to sound (and energy), The aliens in A quiet place are Blind and Attracted to sound. Visually, this is a link to some concept art somoene did for sirens https://www.artstation.com/artwork/gJq4vP this is a link to a Quiet Place alien https://tecake.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/A-Quiet-Place.jpg BTW, the helldivers series is excellent. Defo needs to be turned in to a TV series. Great concept.
