Hello Folks - New Guy Here

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by DDNeal, Dec 8, 2012.

Of whit and prose I know little, but mindless babble wafts freely from my keyboard. I'm looking to start writing and have started a blog site (impressment.wordpress.com) to work on short stories.

I've had a few ideas for story universes in the past but have really wanted to get past the wild imagination into the art of writting. I've put most of my focus into understanding people and what makes a story intreguing. I'm not anywhere near a pro, but I am to a point I feel I should start writing and I'm hoping this community will be a help.

I'll apologize upfront to all the grammer and spelling freaks that must be lurking here. I appreciate your art but I don't share your talents, expect a few typos along the way from me.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, DDNeal!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hello, new member myself, I have also launched my blog, but nobody responds to two or three stories that I have
posts so far. It would be an idea if we rookies joined some "newcomer group" - should there be any such around here
to get connected and share our newcomer's feelings :)
I would love to read some of your stuff.

Hey Hwaigon. A really good book to read about starting a blog is "Platform" by Michael Hyatt. He is the president and former CEO of one of the largest publishers in the US. One of the key takeaways I got from it is build your content up first then try and promote it. I've only got a couple of posts on mine so I'm not really interested in spamming the world with it yet. Once I have a few stories done then I'll start working on a following.

In the mean time I wouldn't mind reading your work. What is your blog address?

Thanx for the tip, I will definitely look it up, seems like a very useful book.
Well, based on your attitude towards writing and how you deal with it and how I deal with it... I think it would be a better
idea not to show anything to you so that I don't look like a fool. :D
But if you really insist, I can send you the blog address, but I have to warn you: I wrote it in the time when I had no idea of the existence
of this forum and launched my blog to get feedback, which did not happen. It's a real trash.

My first few attempts where really bad. Very stilted and read like the wikipedia summery of what I really wanted to write. It's all good.
