If a character's name is a number, say 76, would it need to be spelled out, or can I use the numbers? I kindof hate how it looks in text. Seventy-six.
It's entirely up to you. Usual conventions tend to be in favour of spelling out the whole word, but frankly, it's entirely up to you. Usual conventions also say to spell out the word "and", but here comes China MiƩville's Railsea exclusively using ampersands. Do what you want, argue with your editor if it gets to that.
I'd prefer 76 in this case. If it's a single digit, spelling it out is probably better. But double digit, I think the number works fine.
Well, the choice is entirely up to you. However, when I place "76" and "seventy-six" side by side in my mind, I feel as if "seventy-six" carries more weight, in certain events that I imagine. Like the quick and simple "76" just doesn't cut it anymore. To emphasize this character's actions and persona, "seventy-six" could be used to tell the reader that $%^# has hit the fan or something like that. I also take longer to read "seventy-six" than "76" adding to that weight. Of course, this wouldn't be used all and I believe, neither should 76. Finding euphemisms to occasionally replace that name may keep repetitiveness from bothering you and your reader.
