    A name for a pub?

Discussion in 'Setting Development' started by MrsT88, Jun 18, 2013.

I'm trying to think of a name for a pub, something a little different but not so different that it just sounds too fictional, along with a very little story behind the name.
It's a traditional pub, just your average friendly local where everybody knows everybody. Its clean and fairly modern on the inside, other than that the imagination can still run free.

I'd try to tie it in with the setting of whatever you're writing. "The ___ and ____" automatically sounds pubby, so maybe use that as your basis :)

That's the basis I'm wanting to use. I've googled some, I don't want it to be one that you hear of all of the time yet I dont want it to be something too fantasy/fictional.

Seriously though (;)), just google "list of British pub names" and get some inspiration. You may actually copy one from there or change it slightly so it becomes your own. :)

If I use a name that already exists its not going to cause difficulties is it? There a lots of pubs that have the same name.

The ______ Lounge. Insert name of town. Then characters can just call it "the Lounge". Or something like that. Don't give it a name that's a mouthful of words every time a character has to say it.

If you can tie it in with something to do with your location ...a historical tidbit, or something relating to the industry nearby, that also works. My husband's local, here in Scotland, is called The Auld Hoose. We have The Bay Horse across from the racetrack. There is one up north called The Seaforth Inn, which is—interestingly—not related to its proximity to the water, but to the name of an important historical family. Glasgow's east end has The Saracen's Head (known locally as the Sorry Heid) Babbity Bowster's, Heilan Jessie's, The Tolbooth, The Victoria Bar. Then there are the ones named after the people who run, or ran them. Carrigan's. Or a feature of the pub itself: The Horseshoe Bar—because the bar is shaped like...yagoddit inwun.

If I used this idea any inspiration as to why it would be called the dive? History? Something near by that it is linked to?

Call it the "Adjective Noun". No, I don't mean to suggest that you use an adjective then a noun. I mean you actually call the pub "the Adjective Noun", to mock other pub names.

But if you're really lazy, then just call it something horse-, royal- or flower- related.
