    Punctuation Colons and Semi-Colons

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by James Random, Nov 6, 2016.

I was wondering if these were the correct usages.

    'My name Myc; I'm 33.'

    and

'I had seen that look before: It was the way I used to look at you.'

    Thanks in advance.

They are correct. I still confuse them myself; I often have to refresh the old brain online. I used grammar book.com to confirm your usages.

The first one is grammatically correct but stylistically I'm not sure a statement of age and statement of name are close enough to justify the semi-colon. I'd probably use a period. But again, it's not incorrect, just a judgement call.

    The second one seems fine.

I agree with BayView. I would use a period for the first one as well.

    Thanks all.

It's just that you see so very few semi-colons and colons flying around in their proper usages anymore, always helps to get a refresher on where the buggers are supposed to go.

I actually took those tests and got 10/10 on both!
