What the hell does this mean

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by MatrixGravity, Aug 6, 2011.

'A design school is a good fit for you if you are creative, inventive, and inquisitive"

Whats the difference between creative, inventive, inquisitive? Sounds like the same thing?

Inquisitive means curious. Inventive means to invent. Creative means creativity. At some sorts they do make sense all together.

If you are creative and inventive then obviously one must be curious or you wouldn't be any of these things. In the writing and art fields you kind of need all of these.

Ahh.. Is that so? Well that definitely makes sense. I especially love the word 'Inquisitive." Has a nice ring to it.

Creative and inventive are close in meaning. Inquisitive is the odd one out.

Sounds like a brochure for some design academy. If it is, save your tuition for a school with at least a better thesaurus.

It's a triad of adjectives. For some reason, triads are psychologically more persuasive than ine, two. or four points. It's true that creative and inventive have very similar meanings, and curious fits well with them.

Creativity is more associated with arts, and inventiveness with science or mechanics, so they aren't precicely the same.

But the main thing the copy writer who came up with the sentence wasd trying to achieve was to complete the triad.

One thought is that it mirrors the stability of three-point physical support. A one legged stool is very unstable, as is a two-legged stool. A three-legged stool is the most stable of all. Adding a fourth leg requires that the lengths of the legs match the surface it is placed on; move the stool and it becomes wobbly. So there is an instinctive feeling of stability in threes.

I think that with one adjective, you feel as if it was a random adjective stuck on. With two, it feels like you dashed off a couple of adjectives. With four or more, you're rambling.
