Writing an eBook vs an Hardcopy?

Discussion in 'Electronic Publishing' started by mystrygst2, Feb 16, 2023.

What are the pros and cons on writing an eBook versus writing an hardcopy?

There were times I wonder this about an eBook, how would the author know that after an eBook is purchased by a customer, the customer simply won't just let the eBook to others for free?

    Thanks.

People can give away a hard copy book as well. Of course, an eBook could be copied multiple times and distributed online for free--people do pirate eBooks and make them available to others. You can use Digital Rights Management (DRM) software to restrict this, but it is not foolproof--someone with the right knowledge and tools can break through the protections.

However, generally speaking I don't think this is a big concern for authors who are just starting out, especially if self-publishing. Getting people to find and read your work at all will likely be a much bigger problem than people distributing your work for free.

    Most authors write both

it’s not really a concern to be honest most people don’t want to faff with sideloading an ebook to their e-reader to save a couple of quid

If you're going trad, it won't be your concern or your decision. Your books will likely be released in both formats.

If you're going self-published or indie, going the e-route is the only way to make money.

your writing is copyright as soon as you write it - in terms of registering the copyright the process is the same whether its ebook or print https://www.copyright.gov/registration/
