OK I am slightly bonkus. but here's the drill. a story. a story about a guy with severe OCD. Of his several obsessions one is playing with language. he decides one day to try and use "At the risk of …….." in every interaction with human beings. You can imagine the challenges. Not just a simple "hi how are you" but also an " at the risk of..."/ Buying bread at the bakery: "At the risk of being a total pain in the neck, I'd like you to put that in a bag." It is a reflection of my own obsessions I admit. I am often amused at the way people use softeners, or euphemisms to lessen the impact of their request or to disguise a directr criticism or even insult. The most polite people can be often the most negative or demanding.
And any sentence that begins with 'no offense' is sure to be offensive. Oh, and 'I'm sorry' followed by 'but' isn't an apology.
I like that he's talking about "pain" while buying bread. (Because bread in French is "pain". What? You think my contribution is any worse than the rest of the thread?)
At the risk of upsetting the original poster, I'm going to hijack this thread for flimflam. That's it. I just wanted to use the word flimflam.
At the risk of having egg on my face/slipping a disk, I'll be less than brisk when I twizzle my whisk.
It begs the question: "Average at what?" Intelligence? Height? Weight? Number of hairs on your head? And so what? Half of the people on this planet are above average, by any criteria you care to name.
