You read my mind Hehe. Three of my closest friends at college were Welsh, and the mockery never ceased. That's not to say that everyone else wasn't to subject to equal mockery, though That's what I love about the UK. Each nationality gets made fun of by the others, so it balances out really.
I most definitely agree that the propensity for this viewpoint in Puerto Ricans is cultural. We also have a strange habit of being extremely general about geographic locations. If you live anywhere on the right-hand side of the island, you say you are from San Juan, even though you may live on the southern coast. If you live on the left-hand side of the island then you are from Ponce or Mayaguez. But these are cities, not areas. We simply generalize to an extreme level. We also tend to refer to the entire country of the Dominican Republic as Santo Domingo, even though that is actually the capital city. * * * That Americans refer to the entire U.K. as England is also culturally linked. We know that there are divisions, and we know that there is some kind of wrapper binding the whole together, but as has been pointed out in this thread time and again, it can be a little confusing as to exactly where the units end and the whole begins. At least to the American point of view. So what do Americans do? We use the system we know here in the States which is culturally engrained in us. Federal and State levels. We understand that states have a huge amount of autonomy, but they are not sovereign. The whole of all the states comprise a sovereign union. And yes, we have chosen the name of one of the countries in the U.K. as an incorrect name for the whole of the Empire. We were going to have to pick something, and that was it. In an alternate universe, there is a thread about how everyone in the U.K. is fed up of being called Scottish. Now don’t get me wrong. I understand the gripe. I do. I have spent my entire life being called everything but what I actually am, and even worse; there really is no place in the world to which I pertain. In America I am Puerto Rican. In Puerto Rico, I am American. There is not one inch of soil on this entire planet where I can stand and say, “I am from here,” and not have someone argue the point. So, just be thankful that you’ve a patch of peat to defend as your own.
Ooooh, bad move chocolate bear. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And if she's Welsh, God help you
You know, I had a Welsh kid in my class once. He was weird. Showed us some video of a Christmas party his family had back home.
Exactly. I'm practically old enough to be her father... Er, right. I can't remember much about the Welsh kid and the video because it happened during elementary years. He seemed somewhat arrogant, and it was the first time I had seen the name Sean; didn't know how to pronounce it before then.
Yes but when I say I'm from New York, everyone assumes I mean the city. No one seems to realize that NY is one of the biggest states. (California and TX of course are bigger but I think their the only two) I feel your pain, but yes you are over reacting. I don't get mad when they assume i'm from NY, NY. Nope I just correct them and move on. Some one said something about people who are corrected rudely continueing the action, it's true, depending on how rude I might do it. (Only to that person though.)
Uh... just say you're from Albany, New York (or where ever), instead of just saying New York. Should clear things up much faster.
