Avoiding the -ly's

    It wasn't me lol but yes you can partially forget things.

    Had one incident last night - I knew I had something to do on April 2nd, just couldn't remember what.

    I do think that adverbs may be a lazy way out. When I'm trying to get a scene down quickly, I quite often use adverbs and then go back later and find a better verb or phrase. The end result is stronger and less monotonous without -lys chiming in all the time.

    There are occasions where the adverb works and it isn't necessary to write out a longer phrase to avoid it. I don't feel the need to rewrite the adverb-containing sentence above, for instance.

    But 'suddenly' is my bete noir and something to be slaughtered... I also hate pointless things like 'whispered softly' (anyone heard a noisy whisper?) or 'shouted loudly' (of course a shout is loud).
