I live in Romania and I recently begun a science fiction/horror novel.I searched duotrope and found some publishing houses and I wonder if there is any chance I will get published in the U.S.I would also like some information regarding the whole process:contract, payment and the like since I'm a rookie in all of this.I am from Romania by the way.
Simedrea Adrian, I would say yes, it is not impossible. My publisher (Gryphonwood Press) is a small publisher based in the USA. We have three authors that reside outside of the USA (one in the United Kingdom and another in Australia). Thus, I don't see being outside the USA as a complete barrier. With the publishers you want to shoot for, check their list of authors and see if they have any outside of the United States (if they're a USA based publisher) for example. Good luck moving forward! You'll find a lot of information on the process by reading threads in this section. Chances are, you'll have to deal with US currency and exchange rates if you get to an actual contract. Also, your writing should conform to US spelling and punctuation standards. Other than that, you shouldn't have much more difficulty than any US citizen. Not that we have it easy!
Yes, it's possible. All of my publications so far have been with a small press in the US, whilst I'm in the UK.
it's done all the time... but you should first try to get an agent in the us, not query publishers directly... the agent will take care of all those details for you...
By having the very best book you could possibly ever write, and have them agree with that. Look online for book agents, there are literally thousands - but start with genre specific ones first, that relate to your novel.
specifically, beyond the general advice above: make sure your ms is ready to be seen [polished to a faretheewell, no typos, glaring goofs/glitches] have someone knowledgeable take a look at it to let you know if it really is ready to be seen check agent listings [i have several good ones to send you if you email me] for all agents who rep books like yours check them out carefully to make sure they're legit [start with preditors & editors] write an effective query keep sending it out till you get a taker
