I listen to a specific playlist depending on what kind of thing I'm writing.

I mostly tend to listen to Massive Attack to get that otherworldly, trippy feel.

Currently very into Phantom of the Opera for mood music. When the lyrics become too distracting, I switch to Enya or the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Some excellent tracks in there.

I listen to music as I write. It usually relates to the mood of the story. Super Massive Black Hole for fight scenes, Jack's Mannequin and Augustana for sadder scenes... Stuff like that. or when i'm stumped on a story idea, i'll try to come up with a story with the song as inspiration, without breaking copyright, and just you know... stealing the idea behind it entirely, and copying it.

Also, i sometimes assign songs to different characters to represent their personalities.

I'm kind of thinking about using Radiohead's How To Disappear Completely as inspiration for my opening scene.

I generally always listen to music while I write. I usually listen to Emerson Lake & Palmer, Deep Forest or Supertramp

Anything, really. I write too slowly for it to have a huge effect on whatever's happening in my story at the time, but it helps me pass the time and I often come out of a trance to find I've written a thousand words or more.

As for what exactly I listen to:
Foo Fighters, Avenged Sevenfold, The Strokes, System of a Down, anything. ELO. I have a very wide taste in music.

I find music helps me write, I tend to listen to Jazz singers Like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, I've never been able to work in complete silence I need background noise to help me think so when I'm writing late at night when everyone else is in bed I find myself being very thankful I invested in an Ipod.

    Writing music

I don't like listening to music with English lyrics cause I always end up singing. I prefer instrumental and songs that have foreign lyrics (at least until I start thinking I can sing in that language).

    My current list?
    Azam Ali
    Nox Arcana
    Dead can Dance
    Any classical music
    Lord of the Rings soundtrack
    The Fountain soundtrack
    Inon Zur

So what do you listen to when you write? Any recommendations?

One of my favorite songs to write to (at least to my current work) is Help, I'm Alive by Metric. That's my immediate go to when I start writing for the day. I actually have an ever growing playlist that I have on shuffle while I write:

Strange Times - The Black Keys
    Silence - Blindside
You Could Be Happy - Cameron Mitchell
    The Secret - Emery
Cosmic Love - Florence And The Machine
Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People
    Jacob's Theme - Haoward Shore
Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine
The Cure for Pain - Jon Foreman
Fireproof Main Title (Score) - Mark Willard
    Help, I'm Alive - Metric
    My Love - Sia
    Luvstory - Sigur Rós
    Glósóli - Sigur Rós Takk
Safe & Sound [feat. The Civil Wars] - Taylor Swift

Usually the sofa, on the Laptop, writing...oh and
    Snap.
Plus some War Horse movie music, and Pirates of the Carribean, plus a random collection of pop songs.

Music gives you inspiration, and that's why it's so good to use for when you are writing.
