    New guy here.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by MrJoey, Jun 7, 2009.

    Hey everyone..

Just thought I'd sign up, exactly the kind of place I've been looking for. My names Joe (Many people call me Joey.. hence the name) and I'm an 18 year old student from Bristol, England. I've always had an interest in writing, whether it's posting on the various forums I visit, writing reviews on various things or just simply talking with someone.. over the past year I've really started reading alot of books, so far mostly fantasy, and I'm really beginning to develop an understanding about the genre and the concept of a novel in general.

So I decided hey, why not write my own novel.. and that's what I'm doing. It's very early days, and so far I've only written half of a chapter, but I have a very clear picture of the plot I want to develop and an even clearer picture of the characters I want to drive the plot.. so I guess that's always a good sign.

So yeah, I'll be sure to stick around and try to develop more of an understanding, and at some point I may even consider sharing my work, but it's still early days, I don't know how good (or bad..) it is yet.

Welcome to writing forums. If you ever need help or a review, PM me, Joe. I don't know how much help I can be but I can try w/ the grammar stuff.

Thanks for the welcome. I'll be sure to PM you if I need help. I think my grammar is okay, although I always get the feeling I overuse commas, and I guess I don't know a way in which to avoid doing so. :(

Wow, i have that exact flaw, i always feel compelled to use commas for some reason. My english books in school have hundreds or red circled, commas, needing to be taken away. By the way, i would love to hear your plot Joe.

I dunno :( I don't think it's particularly strong yet, and the chances are I'll probably play around with it alot.. I have exactly the kind of setting and plot I want in my head, but when I try to translate it to paper I always run into brick walls (so to speak) and have to rethink it.

Maybe... i'll give it a few days. Thanks for the welcome!

I'm a comma nazi when it comes to writing, now. I catch almost every comma mistake when I read books and it bothers me so...lol :D

Hello Joey, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hello :) So I take it you're from England too? Good to see such a diverse forum, not too many british, not too many americans, and a good blend of many other nationalities.

    Thanks for the welcome.

Hey Joey, welcome to the Writing Forums. Call me Hedge or Greg, whichever you prefer. SO I would like to interrogate you with the standard introductory questions:

-- what genre do you like to write?
-- what genre do you like to read?
-- and any hobbies or intersts such as music, sports, etc?

    ... I think that's it.

Anyways, welcome to the Forums, and enjoy your path to literary enlightenment. I look forward to seeing your work in the future.

    Catch you later.
