    Resisting a story idea

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by DefinitelyMaybe, Oct 17, 2015.

My partner has just said to me "vampires don't like artificial light" in response to a previous dark skies conference that was in Transylvania.

I had to resist the temptation to turn that into a story with vampires joining anti-light pollution pressure groups because it's inconvenient having so much artificial light at night.

Has your partner read/watched Twilight by chance? Not only do Cullens and other vampires like light, they sparkle like disco balls when in light rather than blowing up or dissolving / bursting into flame [like every other vampire themed book/movie/comic even before that series].

No, neither of us watch twilight. We're aware of different types of vampires, but at least myself is more familiar with (and more likely to write about) light-fearing vampires.

BTW: I'm very embarrassed by the typo in the thread title, but can't change it :(

Twilight didn't happen. That was a bad dream.

I actually think the idea of vampires being anti-light pollution is a good one.

Sounds interesting. Maybe they can form a 'NO LIGHTS!!' union?

Contact one of the mods. They can change the heading for you. Typos in headings happen a lot. :)

There is actually a campaign for dark skies, which I support. I have attended council planning meetings objecting to planned developments because of the light pollution that they will cause. However, I wish to point out that I'm not a vampire.

I too support no pollution, especially for the seas. However, I wish to point out that I am not a whale. :p

But seriously, sounds interesting. I could see your vampires campaigning for dark skies.

Only thing is, is 90% of vampire flicks / books, etc. have them not liking natural light. Artificial light does nothing to them unless it is, well obviously, artificial "sunlight" or UV light. So is the concept to have them disliking artificial light and then go playing in the local part on a night sunny day? Or is it a more "Pitch Black" [Riddick] alien theme where no light the better - the aliens burnt in any type of light.

Vampires typically do have excellent night vision, so, they don't really need street lights, etc. Plus, it's easier to eat people in the dark.

There is a lot of research into lights that produce light that mimics natural light. Perhaps the science has developed to the point where the light is natural enough to bother vampires. After all, it's fiction, and I can make it whatever I want. As well as trying to prevent light, they'd also be trying to promote light more in the blue spectrum that they find less objectionable.

Certainly UV mirroring light systems [there's a trend for the winter blues, to get one of these UV lamps] is a good example. LED lights too if I remember correctly. Fluorescent bulbs are a good use for indoor plants to keep them healthy so they must have enough "sun-like" qualities to be useful.

So you wouldn't have to go too far into the future.
