Social anxiety on a website. Great.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Delise, May 5, 2013.

The last thing a fellow writer said to me was, "Stop being chicken shit."
So here I am, attempting to not be afraid to call myself a writer amongst other writers.

Being chicken shit is a lot easier though.

Was your fellow writer a face-to-face contact, or on a website? Just wondering.

Anyway, don't worry about anybody calling you anything at all. Just read what everyone says about your posted pieces, and take on board the comments that make sense to you and don't create disrespect for you or your efforts. Helpful comments should never make you feel unworthy. If they do, ignore them and move on. If they make you stop and think: hey, they've got a point, I'll try that, then those are the comments you should act upon.

For the most part, everyone on this site is an unpublished writer, just like yourself. We write, so we're all writers. If you write, you are too!

"Being Chicken Shit." Now there's a good topic for a short story, eh?

Was this actually a compliment? Has this writer seen your writing, yet you don't want to share it or are nervous about sharing, and he's saying, more or less, to 'just do it?" If you like it, someone else will, too.

Welcome, Delise! And congratulations on not being chicken shit! (Did that come out right? I hope so ...)

I like how concise and, well, pithy your first post is.

This is a great forum. Have fun!

Welcome. I have a lot of social anxiety, too, although I don't think that anyone's ever called me a name about it. Browse the forum as you wish and try a post now and then. It doesn't hurt as much as you think it will.:)

Don't worry. Square Enix is coming out with virtual virtual reality summer 2014. It's to help those of us who aren't comfortable interacting with real people over the internet overcome our anxieties. Just kidding. Welcome, you'll feel at home in no time!

Friend of ours is in the catering business. When we're ordering I asked her if she knew the difference between chicken salad and chicken shit.

She said no so we didn't order her chicken salad.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what they said. Some people are just rude. You have to learn not to let people get to you so much. Welcome to the forum. :)

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Delise!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. The requirements of the Writing Workshop don't apply to the contests, so new members are allowed (nay, encouraged!) to get stuck in and enter! We also have a growing short story club (think book club, but with short stories!), which you can find stickied in the Book Discussion forum.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

    Face to face

It was another writer from a creative workshop course we took at university.
I had a crush on his mind, so his words encouraged me.

    Banzai! Banzai

I don't know if I'm replying correcting to peoples responses.
I've read the rules many times to make sure I understood them and remembered them.
I'm still confused however about the posting requirements.
Does replying to people count towards posting? Where can I post comments that will count towards
    the 20 required posts?
Thank you for the warm welcomes.
I'm excited to finally join a writing forum!

    No not I

Sorry to disappoint, I live in Japan, however I'm not of Japanese blood.
I'm a thin mixture of German and lost African blood.

    I don't know what I write. I guess that's why I'm here.

    Take it as you will

Yeah, it was a compliment. I hope...
We had a creative workshop class together.
I`m not used to putting my writings out, so he was encouraging me.
Yeah if he told me I was chicken shit, then maybe I'd be offended.

Hello and welcome to the site, Delise.

Don't get hung up on the posting requirements. If you want to post something for review the best thing you can do is start critiquing other peoples work (try to be honest and not just say "this is great"). This will help you qualify to post your own work for review. But, even better than that, critiquing others work helps you identify what works and what doesn't, in your own writing.

Hope to see you around :)
