  1. It's All Coming Back to Me

They say lots of things are like riding a bike, e.g. you never really forget.

A part of biking I'd more or less forgotten was the feel of falling. It came back to me a couple hours back.

I was on my new bicycle, nothing especially fancy but the best I've ever owned, aluminum frame, carbon forks, good gearing and tires, relatively lightweight. Bright white trimmed with gray, with even a matching water bottle. I told myself it is probably the last bike I will buy, and I shopped...
  2. Setsunai is Mono no aware

Driving the main street that travels east and west through town, a canopied tunnel with people walking their dogs and riding their bikes and going for a run, I realize that nowhere else in the world is like this place. Many are made of the same elements. All, depending on how deep you look.

But there's nowhere else in the world where the sun could shine like this again. Where it could fall and highlight that name on that stone, or shower the sidewalk and the freshly cut lawns....
  3. I am Happy. :)

Haven't done one of these things for a bit, so I thought I would make one. :p

I am happy. I am loved by a wonderful lady, that is my world.:friend:
There is no other, nor will there ever be.

Also cooking some ideas for stories in my head, and kinda slogging along
on my WIP. Though I have been tasked with Beta reading Lady S's book
for group this Thursday. Mind you not the entire thing, but I still need to
read a good chunk of it before then. :)

    Just been kinda in a...
  4. This Weekend Thus Far

The heat wave has broken, and typical summer temps have settled back in. Like all waves, the heat wave broke with a crash, this the crash of thunder and heavy rain. W and I had gone further north to a fund-raising auction, and got there just as the rains did. The massive tents were flapping in the wind, and rivulets of water ran through, including over electric cords, which tended to make me nervous. Though no one else seemed to mind, and no one got injured.

    We'd been planning to stay...
  5. Participation Trophies

The Baby Boom generation is generally defined as people born between 1946 and 1964.

My generation, Generation X, is defined as people born between the early to mid-1960s to the early 80s.

Millenials don't have as sharp of lines, but I've seen 81-96 when I looked around. So let's put that on the back of the envelope.

So if we define childbearing age as between, say, 18 and 35 (yes, it is creeping upwards, and yes, creeps have managed to push it downwards since time immemorial, but let's...

  6. Blood

You cut yourself badly, an assortment of glass objects have smashed down on the floor and you're bare foot.

Somebody who's supposed to love you doesn't come right away, but instead arrive a minute later. Instead of being concerned with your well being, they begin to huff and puff, trying their best to guilt you about the mess.

You hobble your way out, avoiding the glass as best you can and hear them say

"You're getting blood everywhere" before returning to muttering under their breath....
  7. Soiree

‘twas baked by a man who had no idea about hygiene
or fixing lawn mowers - but that’s another story,
and so it sat on the table looking kind of ill,
    shrinking in the lamplight.
    morning came
and still no one had touched the little blue hash cake.
  8. Limbo

Warning: This is pretty much a rant.

And yet another day that I can't force myself to sleep early. My mind is bursting at the seams. I so wish I could channel my thoughts and feelings to someone whom I had understood and built a connection with. It's been difficult to convince myself that the reason I'm away from my family for freaking 5 years (dammit!) is just writing. I have no writers group that would share my passions, aside from the university's club, who are... let's say different...
  9. Hi. I need some help.

So Ive got three ideas for my first full length story. Im going to put a ton of work into one of them but i dont know which. I was wondering if some kind people could voice their opinions on whichever one seems more promising.

    Story 1:
    Genre: Fantasy
Note: This story is set in a modern world of magic, where a few people have magic powers which are closely regulated.
Plot: Two brothers are orphaned, one of them aged 5 and the other age 7. They are taken into a rich family who have a 5 year...

  11. Till the Rain Comes

Sitting here on my screened deck, in almost total darkness and stillness. The air is tense, and thunder rolls in the distance. A summer storm is rolling in from the west, a temporary hiatus from the heat, though that won't last and tomorrow will be both hot and humid. But for now it's interesting, the stillness, only a distant bark of dog, the faint drone of crickets, no breeze.

Now a slight breeze picks up, again from the west, and I can sense a faint smell of rain. A tiny moth has...
  12. Pain

After several years of a band I like being on indefinite hiatus, I did some digging and found out that at least part of the reason is the lead singer was having a drug problem with pain killers. Much is speculation, but having seen some of their live performances on YouTube, and reading the experiences of many fans in comments sections across the internet, it seems like a reasonable guess.

Of course there might be other obstacles as well, like the fact that they're all at the age where one...
  13. What About... Existence? Occam's Razor

As I read the various posts and blogs on this forum, the concept of Existence comes to mind frequently. Without realizing it immediately, I had an epiphany. It came from brainstorming a way for the AI in my story to resolve human belief in a Creator. It came from a thought on Occam's Razor a machine could accept, 'simple explanations have the greatest probability to be correct'.
If something has a beginning, it has an end. If something exists without a beginning, it is outside...
  14. I Know You Are, But What Am I ?

I've been thinking about parallel universes for awhile, and today I heard someone discussing the idea on NPR, and did a little more digging around, mostly on the fringes of quantum physics.

I had an idea for a book about a guy who wants to visit parallel universes, and plans to do it by "going back" to the place at which the universes divide, which is I guess a portal of sorts, and he wants to experience his different lives.

Here's the philosophical issue that raises for me: how can "I"...
  15. Farewells and Goodbyes

The German band ‘Wolfsheim’ released a song called “Kein zurück” (loosely translated “there is no going back”) in 2003. There is one line which – due to certain circumstances – I can’t get out of my mind today.

    “Bis du irgendwann begreifst,

    Dass nicht jeder Abschied heißt,

Es gibt auch ein Wiedersehen. (Wolfsheim, „Kein Zurück“ 2003)

    Again, in loose translation:

Until you comprehend, that not every farewell means there will be a reunion.

‘Yeah, of course,’ you may say, ‘that’s nothing...
