Since I forgot to explain in my blog, to me irony is when an action, scenario, or other form of situation has the exact opposite effect. For example, a billboard advertising against unsafe distracted driving is made to catch driver's attention, which inevitably causes one to crash.

Again, sorry about the rather dull post, but nothing writing-related popped into my head today.

There are three types of irony: verbal, situational and dramatic. I must say, though, sometimes I have a hard time distinguishing between situational and dramatic and feel that it can be both. Verbal irony is when a character says something but the opposite is intended by the author. Situational irony is when a situation turns out differently than what the reader would have normally expected. Dramatic irony is when a character in the story is expecting a certain outcome, but the reader and perhaps another character is aware that the outcome will not be as the character expects.

At least, I think I'm putting it the right way.
There's a lot of debate over whether verbal irony is the same as sarcasm because they're very similar.

Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer in my definition: Irony as in Situational Irony. I've seen that horribly mangled over and over, and I just think it deserves a little clearer distinction
