Writing help/references?

  1. I'm trying to write an MC who had an amputation of either her hand or below the elbow. This is a fantasy world and she's in hiding (in a cave in a mountain but not alone- those with her have complex survival tactics) and wouldn't have access to immediate medical treatment. I'm trying to decide what happened that causes her to get it amputated, how it would be amputated, and could she survive as a child going through this? I was thinking either it gets stuck and circulation is completely lost or an infection seems possible. It is possible in the story for her to seek medical attention, but not for at least a couple months. Please help and add any links if you have any! Thank You!

    don't know what others think but tough question to answer in my opinion. so many awful ways it could happen. almost sickening to think about....

    Intentional amputation due to infection would bring with it the prerequisite knowledge of closing the wound with heat. Otherwise the only way you're going to survive an amputation is if you can stop your bodies ocean of blood from spewing out of the new vacant bottomless pit of the world. Without professional aid I would think that flame would be the only way.
