First writing contest entry!

By person24 · May 23, 2019 · ·
  1. Posted my first short story contest submission recently!

This is the first time I have ever submitted and form of fictional writing since school!

I saved the contest prompt in a screenshot, cropped it and imported it to my blank, open word document.
I started typing. Luckily I can touch type so I maintained focus on the prompt rather than the formatting. That could be fixed up later during the proofread. Everything felt good, for a while.

The anxiety started to creep. I started editing and re-editing and possibly over editing sentences and phrases. I lost track of the storyline. I re-read my work and started to panic. I was writing with no real plan and that showed. The readers would just think that I was waffling on for 2k words incoherently.

I was literally having a nightmare, my lack of literacy knowledge was showing through my work. If only I had read more instead of skateboarding, watching tv and partying over the years. If only i realised i enjoyed writing at an earlier age and built on that knowledge. If only I paid attention to the English Lit teachers at school in the first place!! If only Grammarly didn't give me random Americanized English errors!

The stress, the pain, and the anguish are still buzzing around my mind as I write this!

Great fun though, see you next month!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of writing, with the attendant anxieties, doubts and frustration. Though, trust me, it can be a wonderful feeling to fall into the flow and have something actually completed.

Let other people have a look before you beat yourself up too much, and then take their comments, good and bad, with a grain of salt.

I'm glad you joined in! I've seen great things in all the entries so far so no matter which one is yours, you've got one fan.

    Thanks for the comments!

It really was a case of just jumping in two-footed and seeing where it takes me. I must admit, it was an interesting journey which I feel will lead to a fun addiction in the near future!
