"Aye, ma'am." Mac checked his rifle once more, and took up a position behind Anadyr. He smiled, ready to get going. There had been a lot of rumor and theory behind this place. The background checks they had performed had been extensive; anyone with less than a perfect track record had been rejected. It was why they were here.

Mac chuckled to himself. Perfect track record, huh? Hopefully this one would go as planned and wouldn't ruin that reputation he had earned.

Thomas nodded. "Yes, he will be fine." He took the bandage from Jackie and put it on the table. "We should start by getting that bullet out of his leg." He looked at Bill. "I hope Chad or Zain found something to help you handle the pain, or else, this is going to be hell." He turned to Jackie. "Could you see if you can find a heater of some sort? I need to heat up these tweezers."

Zain returned the group at and tossed a bottle of generic pain killers to Thomas. "Best I could find. We need to keep moving, cause I really don't want to be around here when whatere tore up these people from the inside out decides to turn to us." With a sigh, he leaned against the wall and looked down. "If I remember the map correctly, the armoiry is south of here. We should go there next."

"You're such a cry baby. You'll be fine."

"C-cry baby! I was shot! Twice! And, my brother..." Billy caught himself. He didn't want to cry in front of these people. He tried to maintain composure, but he wasn't looking forward to the Dutchman operating on him.
"Whatever you've gotta do, do it quick."

Anadyr lead the team to the cabin. She knocked on the door. No response.
"Kick it down," she ordered. "Clear the whole cabin. Every nook and cranny."

Corinne decided to take a shortcut through one of the central buildings; it would take her out to near the Infirmary, and from there it was pretty much a straight walk to the Viral Research Lab. It would be quicker, and easier, than winding her way around the compound.

She pushed open the unlocked door and headed down the corridor, but soon slowed and then stopped in her tracks. Numb with horror, she stared down at the bodies that seemed to line the hallway. The dead men and women, some of whom she knew, looked like they’d simply slumped down or crumpled where they stood. There were sat in pools of blood, and lines of crimson streaked their faces like tear marks.

Corinne’s chest heaved and she felt hot bile rise up from her stomach as she realised why so much of compound seemed to have been so quickly evacuated.

    They were all dead.

Unbidden, Mike’s words echoed in her mind. It’s just a precaution … we’ll have it all fixed soon, but we need your help … don a hazmat suit and come down …

“Mike,” Corinne’s hushed whisper was loud in the silent hall, “What have you done?”

I stood still, for a long silent moment. memories running through my mind. I stayed quiet and quietly searched the medicine cabinet for and drug I recognised as one commonly abused. To my great pleasure I found one. I discreetly popped three pills, and pocketed the rest. My hand covering the bloody print on my chest. "Pull yourself together." I said softly, took a deep breath and walked over to the group, smiling, though my hands were tucked into my pockets to keep them from shaking.

"So, boss lady," I said to Jackie. "what's the next move?" I wondered what it'd be, and hoped it'd be get the hell out of dodge, I was starting to really hate this place. I hoped those pills kicked in fast.

The three of them moved purposefully towards the cabin and orders followed quickly.
"Kick it down," she ordered. "Clear the whole cabin. Every nook and cranny."

Striker decided to go silent you never knew who might be present. He motioned towards Mac signalling to lean against the wall. He didn't hesistate he placed his boot firmly on the door got a quick feel for its strength. It was just a small cabin outside of the complex it wouldn't prove an issue. He put the full force of his body behind the kick and felt the wood splinter as the door flew open. In one fluid movement he rushed into the room turning to the left, Mac entered to the right and Anadyr was still at the door creating a large firing arc that covered the room.

His rifle swung up to meet the man in the room. His voice faultered for a second he was used to the weapon been turned on him the man infront of him had the Glock buried in his mouth. What the hell had they just walked into...

"Right. But unless you want to bleed to death, I need to be carefull." He looked at the bottle Zaine had given him. Regular painkillers... damned. It would still hurt like hell. He grabbed three of them and offered them to Billy. "It won't help much."

Jackie returned with a lighter, and Thomas started to heat the tweezers. He had done this before, and he should be fine. He just hoped he didn't nick an artery while he was poking around in there. Once the tips of the tweezers were starting to glow red, Chad walked in.

Thomas snorted. "The next move is that the three of you hold this guy down so I can get the bullet out."

"The next move is that the three of you hold this guy down so I can get the bullet out," said Thomas.

Jackie immediately moved towards Bill's upper body to hold his arms. She looked around and picked up a small plastic bottle which she managed to twist into a small tube forming a sort of gag. She then motioned for Bill to open his mouth. Bill wasn't happy about it but knew the reason.

Jackie turned to Thomas and Chad, "Okay, let's get this over and done with so we can move."

I wasn't quite in the mood to mouth off at the moment, so I took position on the wounded leg. Holding it down gently, but firmly. "Ya, lets get out of here." I agreed looking around.

Zain walked over to the end of the table and grabbed the his ankles. "You might want to find something to bite down on." Looking up at Chad, Zain noticed a change in his demeanor. Chad seemed quieter and less of a smart ass...almost as if he was afraid. "Hey Chad, did anything happen while you were off searching?"

Light flooded into the room. Hank's eyes burned. He could see the vague outline of a man.
The Glock was still in his mouth. Do it! Pull the trigger! If you don't, this man will kill you in the worst possible way. You've seen it happen...

But he couldn't. Whether out of fear, or simple survival instinct, Hank couldn't bring himself to shoot himself. He knew firing at the man would be useless, too, so he just let the pistol drop from his hand.

"Fine," he said, "do your worst. At least I wont die a coward."

Mac, burst through the door as Striker delivered a hard kick, immediately he swing in and to the right, scanning for anything that might not be friendly. He found it, but it wasn't in quite the form he was expecting. This tango appeared to be his own enemy. He had the barrel of a Glock resting in his mouth. He saw the soldiers come in, and he hesitated before removing the pistol and dropping it to the floor with a clatter.

"Fine," he said, "do your worst. At least I wont die a coward."

Mac lowered his gun and stepped over to the man. He picked the pistol off the ground.

"Doon't you worry, lad. We're not here ta do you en." He paused, and rested a hand on the man's shoulder.

"Can ye tell us whot happened 'ere?"

The sound of my name caught me by surprise as I had been reliving old memories. I jumped a bit and covered it up with a nervous chuckle. 'get it together' I thought to myself before awnsering. I put back on my smile, "Ya," I started pulling the pill bottle from my pocket with one hand shaking it. "found some of this, I'll share." I offered happily, or at least as happy as I could make myself sound. I felt myself relaxing slightly as the pills began to take effect. I was never an addict, but just like social drinkers, I have tried a little of everything, I knew what it took to get addicted, repeated use, but this once I didn't care, I only thought that a few more pills and I'd be calm. I resisted though, I did like to keep some image of myself infront of the others.

    Lt. Colenel - Raj Malhotra

Hearing the orders Raj moved to the Hummer H1. He visually checked underneath vehicle for any evidence of fluid leakage. He then checked front and left side of the vehicle for obvious damage that would impair operation. Next he inspected bumper supports for cracks. He checked air exhaust louvers to ensure they are clear and free of debris that would restrict air flow. He visually checked tires for presence and under inflation. He checked fluid in power Steering reservoir. He also checked all seatbelts for security, damage, and operation of buckle and clasp ends. He then checked operation of seat adjusting mechanism. He checked for broken or missing fire extinguisher and gauge for proper pressure. He also checked for damaged or missing seal. After checking whether they were right he told, "Everything is perfectly right. This Hummer is operational."

Thomas stared at the bottle chad was holding. "What the hell is that?" He shook his head. "No time to play the addict now, Chad. Get a hold of yourself." Chad was looking fuzzy. Thomas let out a curse, and realised that he would have to do this now, before the tweezers cooled down again. He looked at Bill. "In advance, I'm sorry."

He stuck his tweezers into the man's leg, and braced himself as Bill started to scream bloody murder and tried to push him away. "Shut up and stay down!" Finally he felt the tweezers hit something. Fitting the tweezers around it, he tried to pry it out, which again led to screaming and trashing.

A few sceonds later, Thomas pulled the 9mm out of the mans leg. Damn Clarke for doing thing. He looked at the wound and was happy to see the bleeding had stopped. No arteries had been hit. He handed the bullet to Zain and started to bandage Bill's leg.

"You got pretty damn lucky, you know that?"

"Fine, do your worst. At least I wont die a coward." the Glock hit the ground and was recovered by Mac.

Striker noted the fact Mac lowered his weapon , Anadyr was out of his field of view at this angle. He opted to appear friendly and partially lowered his weapon it no longer appeared trained on the suicidal mans head but was ready to kneecap the man if anything was to kick off.

His eyes flickered around the surrondings as he assesed anything notable the splinters on the floor around him were sizable enough to be used as a makeshift weapon if he did try to turn hostile, the man clearly didn't value his life so caution still needed to be aired. He might try to provoke them to finish the job for him since he hadn't been able to pull the trigger.
"Doon't you worry, lad. We're not here ta do you en. Can ye tell us whot happened 'ere?".
Mac's accent was far thicker than his, time at Sandhurst had seen Strikers accent fade. Keeping its rough edge when needed but becoming clear enough for trainees to understand him.

Corinne ran through the rest of the building, keeping her eyes fixed on the door ahead, not daring to look down at the corpses that seemed to watch her path accusingly. Tears of shock pooled in her eyes, but she felt too numbly horrified to really cry over her dead colleagues.

She burst through the exit at practically a sprint, in her haste to get outside dropping her hazmat helmet and stumbling over a rock, falling onto her hands and knees.

Unseeingly she stared at the ground, her thoughts racing through her head. What had Mike done? What had happened that those people had all died like that?

Something he needed her help to fix. That was right. He wanted to fix it. She needed to help him.

Corinne looked up and saw the blank white building of the infirmary in front of her. She was over halfway across the compound, then, and the viral research lab about half that distance away again. Mike was waiting for her there.

Anger was starting to creep in amongst the feeling of horror and disbelief. Mike had better have an explanation, she thought, and it better be a good one. She didn’t care that he was her boss – those people could not have died for nothing.

"Doon't you worry, lad. We're not here ta do you en."

Hank kept his eyes closed. Why must they toy with him? Why do the sadistic bastards never just do the job and move on? Instead they have to play stupid pointless mind games. He figured he might as well play along, to make it go faster.
"Can ye tell us whot happened 'ere?"
    "Hell has happened."
    A silence followed.
"First they scream, like you'd never believe a human could, and then they bleed, and then they stop doing both. Everyone on the base is dead. I'm still alive because I had advance warning. It's only a matter of time, though, before I die too." Hank was amazed how steady his voice was. He barely recognised it as his own. "You see, it's not the virus. We thought it was, but that was just... smokescreen. What killed these people -- what really killed them -- is... not of this world. I-I-I don't know how to explain it without sounding crazy."

"So, the strain of virus that was released," Clarke was saying, "is harmless?"
Mike nodded. "Absolutely! There is nothing in there that would even affect a human host. Except..."
    "Except?"
"Well, there is a compound involved that increases blood flow."
    "You don't say..."
"B-But it's hardly anything. I mean, at most, it's just airborne Viagra! Certainly not lethal, or anything."
Clarke shook his head. "Everything's lethal in high dosages."
"I... suppose. But it was just a little bit, to speed up the gene augmentation process."
"How much of the virus was released?"
"Uh, um, I don't have exact figures..."
"Enough to cause your staff to overdose on blood thinners?"
"Look, it's possible, but I highly doubt--"
"Doctor, I'm paying you to sell me government secrets. You don't have to mince words with me. It's not like I'll rat you out to your superiors."
"Yes then. It's possible the bodies you saw died of an overdose of anti-coagulants, but it's not probable. There'd be plenty of unpleasant symptoms prior to death that would alert them to the fact."
"Do you have any better theories?"
Mike hesitated for a fraction of a second. He was lying. "That I do not."

"Forget about it," Clarke said. "And forget about your assistant. You designed the procedure, surely you can perform it yourself."
    Clarke rolled up his sleeve.

Mac looked questioningly at the Colonel. If what the man was saying was true, there was certainly more going on here than they had been led to believe. On the other hand, if the man had gone loony, there was still more going on here than they had been led to believe. Mac was under the impression from the briefing that this was a surgical strike against a terrorist group who were threatening a top secret research facility.

Though, he hadn't given much thought to exactly what they were supposed to be researching here. Apparently, though, it was time to find out.

Too late for that Striker thought. No wonder this guy was about to kill himself he was gone in the head. This wasn't PTSD, he could make that diagnosis easily he suffered from it. No this guy had just gone insane hadn't he? But then again he'd heard rumours about this place and their orders had been clear. He got the distinct feeling that their movements were limited they weren't meant to be here and since they were it was engineered so they saw as little as possible.

"Tell us what we're dealing with, your sanity means little to us. We've all served here; we've seen horrors no one deserves to. I'm sure we can relate." His voice masked the contempt in his mind. Yea we'd all seen things we didn't deserve to but we hadn't tried killing ourselves we got out there and took down what ever was responsible for the atrocities we saw. It wasn't revenge it was business.... Most of the time.

Thomas wiped of his hands with the remaining bandaged and stood up. "Right, we should probably get to the armory next." He looked around. "Am I the only one who bothered packing extra bullets? Are you really tha..."

Thomas stopped talking. Footsteps, ouside the building. He pressed a finger against his lips and stalked towards the door, holding a tight grip on his Benelli. He pushed open the door, half expecting to to end up with a bullet between his eyes.

He cursed. He still couldn't see anything. They shouldn't have gone here, it had been a give away. Clarke was probably laughing his ass of right now. "Godver..."

Corinne jogged softly past the infirmary. She vaguely hoped Mike wasn’t getting annoyed waiting for her, but she was more concerned with figuring out how, and why, those people had died.

If a strain of the virus had been released … but in all of her experience Corinne had never seen any symptoms like the strange bleeding of the dead people. What could cause that? It was presumably sudden, but the only possibly causes Corinne could think of involved several unpleasant symptoms that would present beforehand.

She was distracted by the clicking of a door opening.

Her head snapped round. The door to the infirmary was slightly ajar, a shadowy figure lurking behind it. Had someone survived?

She thought she heard a faint whisper, “Godver ..”

“Hello?” she called eagerly, “Is someone alive in there? Do you know what happened?”

What to do? He did not recognise the woman's voice, which ment she was either a survivor or military. Then again, the military would have probably just shot him.

"Yeah, in here, we got a wounded."

Thomas just hoped the woman would believe his bluf. He didn't feel like having to chase her down, or shooting here. If she was indeed a surviving employee, she could lead them to an exit.

"Who's there? Are you a survivor of this place?" asked Zain, as he pulled out his pistol and aimed it for the door. "Do you know what happened to the people here?" In a low whisper to the others, "Get ready. She may be security or an agent and we're intruders surrounded by dead bodies. Needless to say, it won't look good."
