    Alexander was great. Temujin was a monster. I guess the connotation of imperialism changes with your perspective.

    Long live the WASPs!

    Great true anecdote. The mother of a friend of mine just turned 100 a couple of weeks ago. She was duly delivered 'the card' from the Queen. She said: "Oh, how thoughtful. Thank you very much. I have no idea who she is, but it was lovely of her to send me a card."

    Later she was caught talking to the card. She said: "You know, dear, you'd be much more attractive if you didn't purse your lips like that when you're getting your photo taken."

    Who's Guy Fawkes?
    //shot.

    I don't know what Christmas crackers are either. Are they like Christmas cookies?

    I have a whole bunch of Irish cousins, I really should know better...

    Guy Fawkes tried to blow up Parliament, as you do. And Christmas crackers are kind of like paper versions of fortune cookies only they have really bad jokes inside them.

    christmas crackers are little cardboard cylinders [think TP core] covered in brightly colored crepe paper, that go 'POP!' when you pull both ends at the same time [thanks to a 'cap' such as we used to shoot in our capguns]... they usually have paper hats inside and i think some also have little favors, along with the 'fortune'...

    i've bought them in the US for my kids' birthday parties...
