So I'm watching this terrible movie last night with Gwyneth Paltrow doing a horrid job at playing a hip Londonite with a career in PR which she has just lost and a cheating boyfriend. The other woman in the story has chance to meet her and during her next trist with the boyfriend refers to Gwyneth's character as: "Very pretty in a British, horsie kind of way." This is not the first time I have heard this sentiment made to refer to upright, pretty, British women as horsie. What gives? What does this mean?
That she has the appearance of a horse. Some of the upperclass (The Royal Family included) are often said to ressemble horses, and this blamed on inbreading, i.e. the upperclasses intermarry and thus have a small genepool. Horsie characteristics to my mind would be a slightly elongated face as well as pronounced teeth as often seen in caricatures of the well-to-do English Gent. In summary, it is a stereotype when applied to the upperclasses and more generally it is but a description meaning one does slightly ressemble a horse.
Yea, basically what Gannon said. Just how some people look, although they are very few, please don't think all British people look like they need saddeling
yes Paltrow fits the description but add the fact that she is a no brainer and they are insulting the Brits. the horsey people give the appearance of looking down those long noses at others. they may not be but that is the impression they send to others.
Yes, Paltrow’s presence, as a Brit in the movie, was my first red flag that it was going to be retched. I thought, “Hm…. No chance of getting any self respecting, actually British actress to play the role, huh? Yeah, this is gonna’ suck.” And it did.
go google images for pix of camilla [duchess of cornwall] and you'll see a prime example of 'horsey'... here's just one: http://www.happyhysterectomy.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/windowslivewritereventheroyalshavehysterectomies-e70acamilla3.jpg
LOL heather that is priceless darl! Way to go! But yeah the issue has already been addressed so no point in me adding my 5 cents worth lol I just had to comment on heathers comment though lol and I have seen a few Aussies that are like this. A friend of mine is nic names horse head for a reason lol and it is because his face does remind me of a horses head! I even told him.....
Personally, I don't know where this comes from. I mean, look at all the Brits in family guy, they all have the same big teeth. I can honestly say that I don't know anyone that looks like that. I'm not being patriotic here (far from it, I'm very unpatriotic!), but just adding my opinion. There are lots of ugly people here though. See my profile page, for eaxmple. And Torana, I know that's a point to you, sigh!
