Maybe lives of abuse, or maybe lives of loneliness, but they have lived horrible lives. The reason they are searching for their lives. And once they do find out they experience something more. The knowledge seekers and the one who had created this life are now after the ones who had gained the knowledge of their lives. (Basically the first half of the RP is seeking the knowledge, the next half is keeping the knowledge, and the third half is fighting to keep the knowledge.)
