None of the online Thesauruses have it listed. But I've got a character who needs to "harrumph", but she is clearly too young to "harrumph". The dictionaries define it as making a big show of displeasure by clearing one's throat, but it seems like such an elderly thing to do. (Yes, I am 'harrumphing' at this moment, but I'm OLD!) Can anyone help me figure out how she can 'harrumph' in a more youthful manner?
Does it have to be a vocalization? Because if she's a teen or even young adult, a roll of the eyes might be more age-appropriate (assuming you're in a contemporary setting).
