Suggestion [Implemented] Add a subforum to post requests for beta readers

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by sleepindawg, Jul 16, 2019.

How about a subforum for writers to post for fellow writers to beta read? Such a subforum could be limited to members in good standing. It could also have suggestions for general request posts. Such guidelines could include suggesting that posts include approx. word counts and where possible story genre. I do hope such a subform can be formed and soon. I have a 500-word flash fiction piece that I would love to post for a few beta readers who I would gladly read and attempt to offer good suggestions to polish like-sized works as pro quo quid.

Didn't suspect that a dawg that sleeps all the time knew such fancy terms as 'pro quo quid' did you? (I think I used it correctly too.)

    With respect,
    The dawg

Isn’t that what the ‘workshop’ is for?

It already exists in the form of the Collaboration subforum.

And as @badgerjelly notes above, that's also a function of the Workshop.

I actually was tempted to post a request in the workshop but was unsure if I should. I never made the connection in my mind to the Collaboration subforum. Thanks, guys! :)

Looks like I'm going to have to use the workshop as I don't have the required number of days for the collaboration subforum requirements. This brings me to a question of posting form for such a request. Should I post the work there as if I'm looking for a regular critique, just post a request for beta readers and share with them in PMs, or some other method?

BTW, this piece may or may not need a critique as it has never been critiqued but I've let a number of people in my life read it fo see how well taken it is, and the vast majority of them like it already. That's why I'm considering going right in for a beta read without any preliminaries. Maybe one of you would care to look at it and suggest which way I should go with it?

EDIT: Is there something I should do with the "suggestions" tag?

I'll admit I don't know the difference between critique and beta-reading in this context.

If you're posting in the Workshop you should post the actual text you want others to critique.
If you want to request a closed/private beta reading partnership with another member, the only place to do that is the Collaboration forum.

beta reading is usually the whole book/story - wheras work posted in the workshop for critique is usually an excerpt

Right, but the OP said the work in question is a 500-word flash fiction piece.

What are you actually looking for from these beta readers that's different to simply posting for critique? Sounds to me like what you actually need is....critique.

'Pro quo quid' gave me a chuckle!

Oops... That should have been 'quid pro quo', how did I get that wrong? Is there anyone I can blame other than myself?

Okay, this one's been taken care of, so I'm going to list it as solved and lock it up before it goes weird.
